A wedding "party"? [LONG]

Okay, I'm new to these boards and kind of new to the whole wedding planning thing.  I've been engaged for seven months, but we haven't really done anything as far as planning yet because we have lots of more important expenses (saving up for a home, we have a three year-old, I'm a full-time student...)

We were originally planning on getting married in about two and a half years, but due to some financial issues (my schooling, healthcare, etc.)  we'd really prefer to get married sooner.

We were thinking of just getting married at the JOP next summer, and having a wedding "party" as opposed to a reception the same weekend or the weekend after.  We currently rent a lakehouse, so we'd probably just cater/cook some food and hang out, and my FH has a pretty awesome PA system so we could turn the garage into a dance floor.

I was just wondering if this idea was considered classless, far-fetched, or just stupid.  I'm open to criticism and opinions.  This is nothing set in stone, just throwing around ideas that would help us save lots of money and have a more laid-back family gathering.  Not to mention being able to get married much sooner!
