Reception? Restaurant? Or Small house party? Want to save $$$

So we want to keep it low key and really save our money for a house, rather then spend it on a wedding. Any ideas for a small party or gathering of our closest family instead of a traditional reception? Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated!

  • We are in the same boat....no money to spend on a lavish wedding but we still want something fun and memorable. Probably the cheapest way to go is to rent a fire hall (which is what were doing) and some of them are very nice, and have it catered or, depending on the amount of guests, even having several nice food trays/platters would suffice. And you can decorate the hall as you wish and even have extras to make it more exciting, like a photobooth or themed activities. Also look into having a luncheon wedding, if you want it at a more formal reception site but want it low-cost. Perhaps you have a close family member or friend with a large house/yard and they would be wiling to host it there. Good luck!
  • Depending on the time of year I have seen some GORGEOUS outdoor receptions which can span a variety of ideas from BBQs to lawn games

Here are some inspiration pictures I just pulled from Pintrest that might help you come up with some ideas that are perfect for you :)

  • Maggiano's is surprisingly affordable (the one near me can accomodate 150 for a seated reception), has a great bar and extensive wine list, and is a little bit different than a typical venue.  I haven't attended a wedding there, but I have had dinner and really liked the family-style set up--lots of sharing platters and laughing.  My sister and I are strongly considering them for my parents' 35th anniversary because we can afford it and it has an elegant old-world vibe.  Did I mention the wine list?  This Italian girl was very happy with all the options.  And you don't have to worry about tables, chairs, linens, glassware, plates, or flatware--all included.

  • I have been to only one wedding, where it was held outside someone's backyard. Besides my own, it was my favorite. Part of the reason it was low-key. I think its awesome what your considering to do. Sorry that I don't have any ideas to offer. I just wanted to say cool beans.

  • My friends are having their wedding as a pool party at another friend's house. Very low key backyard bbq  - even a little bit potluck too!
