Helping FMIL with outfit?

Hi everyone.  My girlfriend and I are having a committment ceremony in October and are wondering how to handle a situation with her mother.  Her mother is a little odd and although she is actuallly well off she will often not clean her clothes for weeks at a time just to save a little money.  We are concerned about what she will wear to the ceremony and would like to take her out and help her pick out an outfit.  Is it in bad taste for us to offer to buy her something for the ceremony?  I'm thinking of just approaching it as though I want to have a bonding experience with her or something along those lines.  Anyone have any suggestions?

    I think it's a great idea.

No this is not a bad idea at all. I bought my mother some dresses for her to choose from. She ended up selecting something else, on her own that I was able to give the seal of approval to.
