Legalizing our Nuptials

My fiancee and I are planning a ceremony in Delaware this October, and same sex marriage/civil unions are not legal there.  We are considering getting a civil union license in New Jersey and making it "official" there.  Has anyone else had to get it official somewhere other than where they are having the ceremony??

We actually had just a very small ceremony in Massachusetts, and then had our main reception back in Washington, DC (which at the time didn't have same-sex marriage).  Having it legal was quite important to us.

Being a NJ resident and getting a civil union myself, since you're going to go else where why not dead down to DC and get a marriage license? It makes a difference sadly. Or go up to New England to any state but RI. If I were you I'd get the REAL deal, not ourfaux license here in NJ.

Thanks, kcullen37.  I will take your advice and go to DC.  Our officiant is from DC, so we can do something small there with her, then have our ceremony.  Thanks so much!

You're welcome. Our civil unions have been a huge failure TBH. Go for the gold ;) I'll wait it out until my state comes to it senses and "upgrade" to a marriage license (after our current Governor is out of office at the earliest).

If only Pennsylvania would get their act together!  I'm from Iowa, where it's legal, so what's the hold up out here????  ;)

I'm from NY ad we presently live in Indiana.  We're going to Iowa to get our license where it is legal.  Our ceremony is going to be held in Florida.  You have to do research when it comes to making it legal.  The government should just allow it.  The hard part will be your name change if you choose to do so.  You can change it to match someone else, but if you want to change it back to your maiden name will be difficult.  In the court system, if you can't prove that you were married originally they will not change it back.
