XP Is it possible to be allergic to a multi vitamin?

I started taking a multi-vitamin about 4 or 5 days ago and for last 3ish days I have been so itchy. Like my legs, shoulders, and chest have been itching me to death. My skin isn't dry (or at least it doesn't look dry and I always put on lotion daily.). Yesterday I tried an oatmeal bath and it didn't help. It just left me smelling like, well, oatmeal. Nothing in my routine has changed except for the vitamin. Same laundry detergent, body wash, lotions...everything is the same. Could I be allergic to something in the vitamin? I didn't really think that was possible but that is the only thing that I can figure out.

ETA:...and I googled it...

"Symptoms

Symptoms of a multivitamin allergy will occur within a few minutes after ingesting the supplement. Most symptoms are mild to moderate and in rare cases can become severe. Common symptoms, as defined by Healthtree include headaches, itchiness, skin rashes, hive, eczema, fatigue, asthma, sneezing, nasal congestion, wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and a runny nose. More severe symptoms include hives, difficulty breathing and swelling in the lips, face or throat, according to Drugs.com."

  • It may be a filler in the multivitamin.  If you take a regular multi (the kind you swollow whole), try the gummy vitamins.  Does the vitamin bottle say anything?

  • Im taking the ones you swallow whole. I looked up that brand and read abou it. Under side effects, itchiness is listed but it says it is extremely rare to experience it. I stopped taking it this morning and I am going to see if the itchiness wears off. If it doesn't, I don't know what else it could be.

  • It's possible to  be allergic to anything.  My dcotor was really perplexed to find meallergic to deoderant once.  I have to use hypoallergenic ones.
  • I agree, it's probably one of the filler ingrediants.  I'd stop taking it and see if the itchiness goes away.  If it does, then that was your problem and you can take a look at the inactive ingredients, look up common allergies to them, and switch to a different multi (gummy kind is a good suggestion.)
  • I can't see my post!

What I said was that I stopped taking it this morning to see if that is what it for sure is and that it is the kind you take whole by mouth...I'll try the gummies lol

  • Does it have a color to it?  Some people are allergic to the dye they use.

  • They are somewhat pink

  • Definitely.  It doesn't have to be the filler either, could be one of the minerals (I know a girl who has an aluminum allergy) so it depends on the content of the pill compared to what you normally eat in a day.

I would definitely go off the pill for at least a week and see if your symptoms go away.  If they do, try a different brand or formulation.
  • Agree with PPs.

Also, it's possible to develop a new allergy as an adult. So it could be a food you normally eat that you're suddenly allergic to. But start by eliminating the new factor - the new vitamin.

So true.  My mom developed a shellfish allergy in her 50s.  She'd been eating shellfish all her life and then bam! allergic all of a sudden.
