Scripture Reading

Hello All!!! I have a few questions. Right now we have 1 passage picked out that we would like read, Eccelesiastes 4:9-12. Did you just use one or two passages? I am currently looking for a second one. Our ceremony is about serving God, each other and others in our marraige. We are staying away from submit/obey, because we do not agree with that. What are your suggestions for various Bible passages? Thanks!

The only thing we're having "read" is "These Hands" by our BM & MOH. One of my pastors is doing a gospel message with an "If you want to talk to someone about salvation, the bride and groom, their parents, all members of the bridal party, and all officiants will be available after the ceremony" invitation, and FI's dad, who is marrying us, is basing the "sermonette" before we say our vows on Ephesians 5:22-33.

We are also staying from obey/submit scripture and also 1 Corinthians.
We chose Jeremiah 29:11-12 and Song of Solomon 8:6.

We used the scripture in Ecclesiastes as well as the Love chapter in 1 Corinthians.

We're having three. I've narrowed it down to
Song of Soloman 2:10-13, 8:6-7
Tobit 8:5b-8
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Colossians 3:12-17
Mark 10:6-9 (I'm pretty set on this one.)

Full text in my bio.

Tobit?? What kind of bible do you have that has that in it?? I've never heard of that.

We don't like the "normal" verses from 1 corinthians or ecclestiaces, so we're probably going to have Philippians 2:1-4

Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

I also like John 15:9-12
J
esus said to his disciples, “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Tobit is in the Apocrypha, which is included in the Old Testament in the Catholic Bible. It's 14 books of Jewish history that the reformers did not consider inspired for multiple reasons. You can read here for more on why Luther and the reformers removed those books from the Canon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocrypha

I realize it's wikipedia, but I was trying to find a non-protestant/non-catholic resource and figured this would probably have a better mix of opinions. You can do more research on this yourself, as well, for more opinions on both sides.

Also found this: http://www.learnthebible.org/the-apocrypha.html

We also wanted to use a more non-traditional-wedding reading. We'll be doing Colossians 3:12-17 and a reading by Frederich Buechner. Text is below:

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
“They say they will love, comfort, honor each other to the end of their days. They say they will cherish each other and be faithful to each other always. They say they will do these things not just when they feel like it, but even -- for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health -- when they don’t feel like it at all. In other words, the vows they make could hardly be more extravagant. They give away their freedom. They take on themselves each other’s burdens. They bind their live s together... The question is, what do they get in return?

“They get each other in return... There will always be the other to talk to, to listen to... There is still someone to get through the night with, to wake into the new day beside. If they have children, they can give them, as well as each other, roots and wings. If they don’t have children, they each become the other’s child.

“They both still have their lives apart as well as a life together. They both still have their separate ways to find. But a marriage made in heaven is one where a man and a woman become more richly themselves together than the chances are either of them could ever have managed to become alone.”

We are using 1 John 4: 7-12

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Harper Collin's Study Bible (FI's) and New Oxford Annotated Bible (mine).

As Emily said, it's part of the apocrypha. The Tobit verse was on the list of approved verses by our Church (Episcopal). I was surprised because the only times I'd heard it discussed were in religion classed in college. Ecclesiasticus (not to be confused with Eclesiastes) and Wisdom of Solomon (different from Song of Solomon) also part of the apocrypha, along with several other books.

It doesn't matter to me whether or not the books are inspired works because I enjoy them as literature.
