Engagement Announcement??

I recently got engaged and when my FI and I shared the news with our pastor last week, he asked if we had an announcement that he could put in the bulletin - he said we could use the same one that we put in the newspaper. I looked at him with a confused look and explained that I hadn't even thought about that. We're both around 30 years old and it's our first wedding for both of us. We don't even know very many people who read the newspaper. We've already announced it via word of mouth and FB.


So . . . do people normally put announcements in the newspaper and/or church bulletin for engagements? Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

I've never seen that at my church, but our church is huge and the chances of you actually knowing the people who were engaged is pretty slim. Maybe if you went to a small church where everyone knows each other it would be more common.

We shared by word of mouth and FB.

"people" do, yes, but I don't know who.  It's not common in my circle of friends or in my area in general.

I have seen it done.  However, I haven't done it.  Our church is small about 50 people; I just had my parents announce it.  My town is small but I am not putting an advertisement in the paper.  I really don't want any more quest problems then I am already having.  Not that putting one in the paper means you will have guest problems.  I jut have pushy people in my town.

We didn't do an "official" announcement in the bulletin or newspaper. But we did announce to each of our churches in person (about 40 people per congregation).

My parents were insistant on putting an announcement in the paper, so they did one in my hometown and DH's hometown.  We had announced it on FB before the next Sunday, so most of my church knew by then.

Lol. It seems that the newspaper method was pre-FB. Some people don't realize just how usefull FB is :)

We phoned and FB and word of mouthed. When we booked the church, they asked if they could put an announcement in the bulletin (our church is huge, but they still do it), so they did that. We never initiated any written announcements though. I think it's whatever you want.

Thanks. I think we're just gonna tell the secretary that if they want to print it, go ahead, but I'm not going to take the time to creat an official announcement for them, which is what they were asking for I guess.

We skipped the newspaper, but had our engagement announced in the bulletin at my parents' church. Nothing fancy, just the typical, 

"Mr. & Mrs. Smith are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jane Smith, to John Doe."

We put it in our town newspaper, not the bulletin at church.  We do have a smaller church though and everyone knew pretty quickly. But I don't think there is anything wrong with it, if that is the normal practice at your church, go for it!

We didn't do anything at church... My grandma REALLY wanted us to put a engagement announcement in the newspaper and didn't understand why we didn't want to. I said there are people who I really didn't want knowing about what I'm doing with my life haha. No FB for me, but I just told everyone on the phone and in person. It's totally up to you what you want to do.

FMIL really wants one in the paper but we keep forgetting so ours is going to end up announcing an engagement 9 months past the actual proposal. Whoops!
