Re: Harry Potter... Twilight... etc. Opinions please.

  • I'm pretty sure if I walked around with a stick and said "lumos" that it wouldn't provide light. It's not withcraft. It's a book.
  • I think as with most things, some people just take it out of context, and way too far.

  • I most certainly do not understand how Narnia is ok and HP is not.  Rowling is Christian.  While she may not have centered her story around Christian ideas she wasn't setting out to say that witchcraft is the best thing in the world and we should all drop our morals and beliefs and do it.  She's Christian.  It was a story she was writing for her kids.  And... Narnia is still about a MAGICAL place.  Yes the witch is evil (lion witch and the wardrobe) but Aslan has magic otherwise he wouldn't have been able to do the stuff he did.  I think that it is ridiculous.  I don't even like the narnia books.  Same goes for LOTR.  Yes the guy was christian but there was still magic in the books and good magic too.Just because Harry Potter is centered around witch craft doesn't mean it is going to encourage people to go out and become witches.  I will never understand it.

[QUOTE]I have a friend who's very anti it - she told me that the writer or HP is a self professed witch... (what) and that we shouldn't mess with stuff like that. I understand if she doesn't wanna watch it, she's had dealings with witchcraft in the past and it's been quite a strong prescence in her family. But I really didn't like how she preached to our girls bible study that they should throw away all their HP books etc. It's a book.

Your friend doesn't have the faintest clue as to what she is talking about. Maybe you should so kindly inform you friend that spreading a rumor about a person is a sin. See how she likes them apples.

I do know who C S. Lewis is thank you I've read the books and I'm well aware of the christian elements in both Narnia and HP and i think many would agree that there are some in HP.  My point was that HP has good elements and Narnia has magic in it so neither are right or wrong.  Just because Narnia was written by a theologian doesn't make it better than HP.  Rowling is Christian.  If you are going to not read HP because it's magic then you need to cut everything out that is against Christianity.  X Men promotes the theory of evolution.  What about all those super hero movies.  What about Thor?  They have another god?  The disney channel has made many movies and shows that promote magic.  The Wizards of Waverly Place was a show.  Twitches was a movie.  Harry Potter and the other books out there like it get children to read.  I will never be opposed to anything that helps children learn that reading is fun and okay.  As long as it is age appropriate and they understand that it is not real what is the big deal? Literacy is such a big issue today.  Why would you keep a child from reading something they would enjoy?  I have met children that learned to read because they wanted to read HP.  But then again it is a personal choice like I have said before.

  • Aslan definitely = Jesus.  He loved them all, he died on a giant stone slab to save the kid and then vanished from the stone and then reappeared in an eternal happy paradise!
  • My son read the narnia books before my FI was around ... So he couldnt say no ... [its also not his kid] ...
Future kids i dunno,, We'll go ten rounds about it I'm sure ...

I have never seen any of them. H.P. or Twilight, but I don't want to either. As for Harry Potter, I want to steer clear of that stuff. And Twilight, yuk. I am not sure what the story plots about, but who wants to watch stuff with vampires and junk?

Um, really .... I think it has been established that Narnia has Christian themes.

Have you ever read HP? Or is your opinion on it based on what someone has informed you? Did you know that the author of HP is a Christian? Did you know that it is Good vs. Evil?

Thank you! I still stand by my point... you can't pick and choose.  If one book with that subject is bad then they all are and it seems that people don't understand that.

<div>I said nothing whatsoever about Harry Potter. Never read the books, never seen the movies, not because of religious nuttery, just because it's not interesting to me. </div><div>
</div><div>I was more so reacting to the poster who wrote that Narnia is bad because of the presence of witches or whatever. </div><div>

  • I didn't say Narnia was bad. I said that it has magical elements in it and that if you are going to say one is bad you have to say all are. It doesn't matter whether the author is a pastor or just a Christian. That was my point. I love Narnia and have read all the books and watched the movies. My point was directed towards people who pick and choose. I'm sorry if I caused problems. If you go back and look at the post after yours it might clear stuff up from my point of view.
