Just Found This Board..... Introducing Myself

Hi y'all!

My name is Rachel.  I've been lurking on The Knot on various boards for awhile, but I just discovered this one.  I added my info to the Roll Call thread.  I can't seem to see the last page, including my post, so I figured I'd start a thread.

Here's some background on me:
I'm 23.  Getting ready to start my third year of medical school.  My fiance is 25 and works in IT.  I like to read for fun and play video games when I have time.  We live together with our two cats, Ducky and Blake.  Ducky was my college graduation present and Blake we adopted after moving in together.  Our wedding is set for Sunday, November 3rd, 2013.

If there's anything else you want to know, just ask! Can't wait to get to know y'all!

  • thank you so much for posting again! I saw we had a new poster on the roll call but hadn't been able to go to the last page either. I have a question into IT but as you will learn, TK has some wonky IT issues. If its ok with you, I am going to add you to the upcoming exciting event thread.

Sure, add away!  And yeah, today is apparently a bad day for TK IT.  The etiquette board is acting wonky too- posts disappearing and reappearing.  Crazy!

And thanks for being so welcoming y'all!

Weird. I wonder why it acts wonky so much.

I'm from Fredericksburg, but I currently live in Richmond for school.  What part of VA are you from?

  • Do you have any idea what specialty you want to do?  What rotation are you starting with as a 3rd year?  How do you like MCV?  Or is everyone calling it VCU now?  Stony Point or Short Pump for shopping? Favorite restaraunt in Richmond?

Lots of questions, I love it!

I want to go into forensic pathology (doing autopsies). I start rotations in less than two weeks (AHH!) with Psychiatry.  Then OB-GYN, then Internal Medicine, and then I lose track.  I know I finished with Surgery.  I love MCV.  Everyone is so super supportive, it's amazing.  I went to undergrad at VCU, so I am a Ram through and through.  I actually call it MCV because I grew up calling it that.  Some people will call it VCU School of Medicine, others MCV.  It just depends.  Some of the professors refuse to call it VCU, leading to some very interesting tirades during class.  Students in general alternate between the two.  We recognize that we are a part of VCU, but celebrate our history as MCV.

I've actually never been to Stony Point.  My future in-laws live near Short Pump, so we go there alot.  It's a handy dandy place.  Pretty much any store you need is there.  Also, I love saying Richmond has the biggest D*ck's (Sporting Goods) in the world (which apparently you can't type out on this site, even though I'm referencing a store).  Ok, mind out of gutter now.  My favorite restaurant is probably the Melting Pot (I'm a sucker for melted cheese and chocolate).  If I had to chose a local place, I'd go with Vinny's.  It's sort of a chain, but local to VA and I think it started in Richmond (I could be wrong).  I also love Bill's BBQ.

  • ooo, I'll have to try Vinny's next time I'm visiting the in-laws.  My favorite places to eat were Peking and Phil's, which were on Grove, but they're both gone now.  :(  ooo, if you're getting married in Richmond, I recommend Westhampton Pastry shop for cake.  It's on the corner of Libbie and Grove.  They also have really good brownies....

DH really liked psych.  That's what he started with.  He didn't go to MCV, but his dad did a looooong time ago.  FIL is grumpy about is being called VCU med school, so I didn't know if he was the only one who still called it MCV or not.

Totally go to Vinny's.  It's like Oliva Garden, but more casual and delicious.  Ask for the Fried Ravioli as an appetizer- it's a secret not-on-the-menu item.  Fantastic!  My future in-laws love Westhampton.  We looked at them for our cake, but it wasn't quite what we were looking for.  We're going quite non-traditional, and wanted something more customizable.  We're going with Cakes by Graham.  And no, your FIL is definitely not alone, trust me.  I've heard psych is a good one to start with, so I'm hoping that strategy works for me too.

I love that show. It's one of my favorites.  It's one of the few crime shows I can watch, because so many of the others are completely inaccurate.  My undergrad degree is in Forensic Science, so I tend to overanalyze the errors in the shows.  I can't watch CSI without screaming at the TV.

November is an awesome wedding month- I love the fall!

We have lots of wedding details actually.  Because of medical school, we're trying to get as much done as possible before I start clinical rotations. I'll share our engagement story first, then the wedding details.

Engagement story:  We met on Match.com.  We date for a few months, then moved into together as roommates last summer.  Long story short, I got kicked out of my old place (no fault of my own) and had to find somewhere quick, so we found a 2 bedroom place together.  We were hesitant at first, but I think it worked out for the best.  School was so busy and stressful last year, we hardly would have seen each other.  Living together brought us closer.  In November, around our 6 month anniversary of dating, he proposed.  he had planned on proposing on Christmas, but after showing the ring to a friend earlier that day, he just couldn't wait any longer.  He proposed whle we we cuddling on the couch, watching the NASCAR truck series season finale.  Considering our first date was meeting at a bar to watch a NASCAR race, it was the perfect proposal.

    Wedding Details:
-Ring: Opal set in white gold with celtic knots and tiny diamonds on the sides. Wedding ring is a guard to go around the ER.  His ER is titanium and his wedding ring is tungsten.
-Venue: Ceremony and reception at the Richmond County Club.  Ceremony will take place in front of a beautiful fireplace
-Caterer: food provided by venue.  They are currently redoing their menus, so we haven't picked our food yet
-Cake: three tier, square, covered in fondant, flavors are french vanilla/almond orange/chocolate, decorated with picot dots and fondant bands in our wedding colors (blue and pink, alternating)
-DJ and Photographer have both been booked
-Dress: from David's bridal, it's actually a "bridesmaid dress", it's PINK!
-STD's are Back to the Future themed
-Invites we made on Vista Print
-I just finished making our centerpieces: candles set on top of water beads in glasses
    -No flowers (I'm allergic)

So that's probably way more information than you thought you would get.  We've gotten quite a lot done, especially considering it's so far away.  Feel free to ask more questions.  Oh, and I have pictures of most of it if y'all want to see some.
