    do the 2 round "dishes" at the top come off? cream and sugar for coffee maybe?

    Yes they do. That makes sense. I just had a quick look to see if there are any matching tea sets but haven't seen any yet. Although the containers are very small, almost look like candle holders

    Would you consider taking it to an antique dealer or an appraiser of some kind? If it's something your great-grandparents had it may have some kind of monetary value (you could choose to keep it as a family heirloom and let the value appreciate). It also may help you figure out exactly what it is.

    If there's any kind of mark on the bottom, scour replacements.com for possibilities. I thought my great-grandmother's china was super-traditional, but then I found stuff I consider a bit tacky like cup-and-snack plates and sconces and miniature tea sets. But if it's porcelain and was supposed to hold food or a bathing implement, replacements.com probably has an example.

    if the jars are really small, it makes me think desk set, with two jars for different colors of ink.


    Or there's still the possibility of cream and sugar, with a "plate" area for biscuts or crackers.
