How do you plan to keep Jesus at the center of your wedding?

Hi everybody! I've been lurking around The Knot for a while now, but I just stumbled across this board the other day! I'm thrilled to pieces to find a community of fellow Chrisitan brides! I know that there are a lot of different denomonations represented here, but there is still a lot of common ground. It is so encouraging to be able to converse with people who have similar beliefs and views.

My fiance and I want to have a wedding the truly brings honor and glory to God. One thing I've discovered is that if I am no proactive about finding ways to keep our wedding focused on Jesus Christ, it is so easy for things to slip away from being centered on Him and become centered on us instead. What are some creative things that you are doing/did to honor God in your wedding?

Hi Bekah!  Welcome to the board!

We made sure that we made worship the center of our ceremony.  We sang The Doxology right after the processional and had several scriptures presented throughout the ceremony.  DH's dad officiated and his "sermonette" was based on the first half of Ephesians 5.  My assoicate pastor presented the Gospel, and my senior pastor read the meaning of the Cord of Three Strands along with Ecclesiates 4:9-12.  We also had a Marriage Covenant.  During the ceremony, our parents, pastors, and attendants signed it after we did.  We had it at the end of the receiving line afterwards for our guests to sign.

You can click on "Planning Bio" below my tickers to see more, including our music selections.  The ceremony wording is under "Ceremony."  It's not a total transcript because we gave our pastors and DH's dad a lot of freedom in their "parts."  They know how to do it...I wasn't going to put them in my box.

    Good luck in your planning!!

  • We had multiple prayers, a poem read aloud by our friend (who wrote it himself) about marriage being like Christ and His bride, a mini-sermon on Ephesians 5:22-28, mentioned God in our vows and many other parts of the ceremony, had the pastor explain the unity sand ceremony with Ephesians 5:31 as we poured the sand, and of course played a good bit of Christian music for the recessional and reception.

  • We found that planning our wedding naturally centred around God... but here are some specific aspects:

worship music throughout (at least 4, maybe 5 congregational songs throughout the ceremony), foot washing ceremony (linking back to Jesus' example of servanthood), prayer, sermonette

our "theme song" is Today I Choose.. that will be our recessional (our processional is a variation on Oh For a Thousand Tongues to Sing)

    vows, etc.

    Happy planning :)

  • The marriage address was Christ centred as well as the 1st reading (1 Peter 3:1-7) and congregational hymn (The longer I serve Him).
  • Our theme is "3 cords not easily broken". We plan on doing the cord tying, in addition to the 1st and 2nd readings being from the bible, a prayer by a 3rd reader and the Lord's prayer being played. Everything about the ceremony, esp for the song I am walking out on, will be a reflection of our faith.

At the reception, each table will have a scripture. There will be prayer at the reception as well.

Another thought about is on the lifestyle piece. One of my biggest life motto's is "Let you light shine among men." I think our wedding will be about two young people in the faith who are in the world, but not of the world. I think we have a unique chance to show our love ones, esp those young adult unbelievers, that you can still have lots of fun as a Christian. We plan to have a fun reception and after party.
