Extreme Heat

Is anyone else being affected by this?

I live in East Tennessee and it is crazy hot here. We aren't having storms and it isn't humid like normal. It's very dry. Nearly everyone in my community has been affected due to livestock dying from the heat. My pet rabbit died from it Saturday. Though I wasn't very fond of her since she tried to bite me every time I stuck my hand in her cage, I still didn't want anything bad to happen to it. A friend of FI lost an entire litter of beagle puppies. I think it is so sad.

Re: Extreme Heat

  • Wow, that's serious!  I'm sorry for your loss.  I knew the South and Mid-Atlantic have been really hard hit.  As some people on this board know, I lived in DC for eight years and recently moved away, but all my friends there are without power.  It may take a week for some of them to get their power back.  They had to go without air conditioning or even gas this past weekend.

And as an environmentalist, I really do think this is climate change.  I fear it's going to become more common, and there are so many unforetold costs on people. I just want politicians in DC to suffer from the heat along with everyone else so they know what they're getting us into...  :-)
  • Oh my goodness! I didn't realize it was that bad. I live on south NM, so I'm in the middle of the desert and it has been over 100 degrees everyday for the past couple of weeks, but that's totally normal here.

I heard about the crazy temps in the mid-west, but didn't realize how bad it was affecting people (and animals!). I hope it cools down very soon for you!
  • Yep, I am right there with you. All weekend, we were in the 100's. Luckily a lady who goes to church with us has a pool and she was a very gracious host all weekend. We spent the weekend by the pool, playing games and cooking out.

We had really, really bad storms on Friday night. hundreds of thousands of people were without power. My IL's still don't have power as of this morning.

  • I'm so sorry.

My parents were lucky - they headed out of their town in WV a few hours before the storm.

  • I've been hearing about this A LOT! It's been very mild up here in the NW, but I wouldn't wish that kind of heat on anyone.

  • Wow, I didn"t realize that animals were suffering. That is so sad! It is in the 90's here. We are going to Florida today so we'll see how it is there. I heard about the power outages. I hope that is fixed soon!
  • We had a bad storm on Thurs and some were out of power about 30 min from here... Its been about 90-95ish... we have central air so it's not too bad for us but at work it's basically just fans the unit AC is off and it's terrible for the residents and for us working... They are very antsy and harder to handle... I'll be out of that place at the end of this week I had to buy new scrub tops that were lighter /white to keep my temp down...

It's usually this hot in PA at this time of year we have the Creation Fest last week in the middle of the state and its always the hottest week ... My kid was at camp in the Poconos but he was ok  because its cooler up there...

  • Not that this counts since I am in Germany but it's been hot and humid here all last week.  Now we are having crazy thunderstorms.

I am really sad to hear about the animals.  :(

  • It's going to be cooler here today!  The high is only 99!  We'd been in the triple digits this weekend.

  • I'm so sorry about your rabbit and the litter of beagles. I love beagles!

I've been amazed at the crazy heat wave which seems to be blanketing the midwest all the way to the east coast, but stopping before FL. It's been hotter up in CT for my family and friends than it is here in FL. Craziness! It's in the low 90's here which is normal for us, but it's in the 100's it seems everywhere else.

My only advice is stay indoors in the A/C as much as possible or to be swimming somewhere. Drink lots of fluids and try not to stay outside for too long. If you have dogs to walk, take them on short walks at night when it cools off more than during the day.
  • We don't have any other animals as pets. A bird has built a nest in our carport and now has 3 little baby birds. I feel like they are half mine lol because I keep going outside to check on them. In my area no one is without power so that's good but like others have said, there is a ton of people who are. It's terrible. Normally it is in the 80's about now. Today was much cooler but on the news this morning, they said Nashville had a record temp over the weekend of 106 and it's been that hot here. I think our record was 108...it is never that hot. I'm traveling to Georgia this weekend and I know it will only be hotter down there. I completely dread it :(
