Where Is Everyone?

What's happening on this fine Saturday evening?  I went to Let's Dish today which is one of those places you go to and make meals to freeze for later.  They have lots of stations set up with all of the ingredients you need and then you just put it all together, bring it home and freeze it.  It was fun but I had to rush up there and do my grocery shopping before meeting someone to go there.  Then I had to rush home, pick up my dad and bring him to our CPA to drop off his tax stuff.  Then I had to rush to my hair appointment and was there for 2 1/2 hours!  By the time I got home I was ready to crash!

What is everyone else doing this weekend?  Any wedding planning going on?

Michael's had a sale on flowers so since my mom and I are doing all the flower arrangements for the reception... we stocked up. We also got the flowers for my toss bouquet. I'm also working on getting invitations adressed to go out the begginning of next month.

I've been hanging out around the house, mostly playing Sims 3.  I was off work this week, so I'm trying to relax as much as possible before I have to go back to work on Monday, lol.

FSIL came up to visit other FSIL and hosted a Scentsy party today, so my mom came to town to meet some more of FI's family and hang out.  I came home with her beacause my car needs new brakes, so I'm taking the "3rd family car" back to school with me after church tomorrow.

I'm also taking the invitations with me since this will be the calmest week of my semester, and I'll actually have time to work on something WR.

Going to church tomorrow, lunch with the family, and then back to school.

H was off today too so we took a bike ride with the dogs to the bank to deposit my paycheck.  Then we tried to run an errand to get rid of an old air conditioner at a scrap metal place, but the place went out of business!  So we went to a different place and when we got there they were closed for the day :-(  We were headed home and both starving, so we stopped at home long enough to change clothes and went to dinner at our favorite Thai place, then got a movie.  We watched the movie and now we're justing chillin' for the rest of the evening.

Tomorrow H has to work so I'm going to run some errands and take care of some of the day to day household stuff.  We're having dinner with my parents tomorrow evening for my mom's birthday.  Her birthday isn't until Wed, but my dad is having surgery Tues so we decided to do it before his surgery so he can participate.

Just got off the plane from California to DC.  I went for a one-day trip to SF for last-minute wedding planning and a funeral.  Ironically, it was the least-tiring flight I ever had from there.

DH had to work for a bit today, but he got off early so we got to spend time together. :)

We went bowling with his family, and then watched UFC. I'm now really sleepy, and about to head to bed. ;)

I love reading about everyones weekends :) so fun!

Friday I started packing. You never realize how much stuff you have until it's time to pack it right?! I packed up my winter stuff and my next task is to start packing kitchen stuff that I won't use frequently, along with books. I also started selling stuff on Amazon to make a little extra cash and get rid of stuff.

Worked out with Jillian who kicked my butt (30 day shred) :) and also have been organizing my closet and grocery shopping. Today I'm planning on catching up on some of my scrapbooking - I have all the supplies I bought for a scrapbook for FI & my vacation that we took last summer it's just been sitting here. Trying to use up stuff before I move so I don't have to pack as much and I'm not wasting stuff either :)

Next weekend I'm heading home to my parent's house to stuff invitations with my Mom - she's been amazing and printed each address on the envelopes for me! I also get to try on my dress again and I haven't seen it since October so I'm very excited :)

Mom and I went through a bunch of WR stuff on Friday.  We now have a VERY small "to do" list and a BUNCH of things are on the "to done" list.  On Saturday, I went to Hobby Lobby and got my "memory book" (which will also serve as the guest book), ribbon for binding the ceremony programs, the glass vases for the unity sand ceremony, and looked for unity sand (bought white sand, couldn't find green that day).  We also have ordered the vellum paper that is going to go on the outer cover of the ceremony program, designed the reception/menu cards, as well as the tag we are printing to tie on to the favors!

Next on our WR to-do list is to finalize all guest addresses and make sure we're not missing anyone, start addressing invitations, purchase postage (ugh, have to wait on purchasing post-card postage until April 17!), and begin printing the ceremony program, reception cards, favor tags, and the "day of" itinerary for the wedding party (and me).

NWR... I am almost 100% recovered from the "walking pneumonia" I went through this past week and am returning to work (reluctantly, I might add) on Monday.  I am going to have to PUSH through the last 3 months of the school year in this new school and just do everything I can to make it through each day.  However, I do NOT like the job, I'd almost rather work at a traditional work (12 months of the year) for lesser pay than to work at this school where the children are taught from elementary school onwards that school is the place to GET AWAY with crap as opposed to the place to LEARN.  I've NEVER been in a school that was THIS bad in terms of overall testing proficiency, behavior, and mannerisms of the community, and I've worked in low income (85% free-reduced lunch) before.  This school takes the cake.  To boot, it's supposed to be middle school, but most of the kids are at least 1 grade level behind if not more, so it's not just "middle school" issues, but high school growing up issues too.

I'll stop complaining now... Got to go play a concert for the Crop Walk in my town. (it's a walk to end hunger).  Wish me luck...

Kelly, have you ever read the CHAMPs book?  It sounds like that would be very helpful in your case.  If you haven't read it or heard of the program, let me know.  I can send you a bunch of stuff on it.

I don't think I've heard of CHAMPs but I'll ask around - the school may have a program in place that I don't know about yet.  I have the books on teaching in poverty and I come from a not-so-rich background so I know what kids go through when they can't have something that it seems like so many other kids have... I just can't believe the level of behavior problems in this school and the fact that it's allowed to happen from kindergarten onwards.  (And this is middle school, so by the time it hits me, the behaviors are almost set in stone)  It makes me sad.  :-(

I totally understand what you mean.  CHAMPs is just a way to keep yourself consistent and make it easier for the kids to know the expectations as well as the consequences so there are no surprises.  I had the good fortune to be in a seminar with the creator of the program/author of the book, and one thing he said will stick with me forever - "Kids can't hit a moving target."

The word CHAMP is used as an acrostic.  C = Conversation, H = Help, A = Activity, M = Movement and P = Participation.  I use it like this:

"During this seat work, there should be no conversation.  If you need help, raise your hand and I will come to you.  You should be working on the packet.  At no point should anyone be moving around the room.  If you need to get up for some reason, raise your hand and I will come to you, then you can ask for permission to get up.  I will know you are participating because I'll see you writing in your packet."  All of this would also be on a poster or written on the board so there's a visual I can point to for a reminder.

Then we have a list of consequences.  First time is a reminder, second time is a student/teacher conference, 3rd time is the SODAS form that I stole from Boys Town, 4th is call home, 5th is referral to the principal.  So if I have to remind a kid there's no moving around the room I would say, "John, during seatwork the expectation is that you will remain seated.  If you need to get up, raise your hand and I will come to you.  This is your warning."  The second time I'd have him/her step in the hall and we'd conference about it, the 3rd time I'd hand him the form, etc.

It is really helpful for me because it makes it easy for me to be consistent.  I work in a school that sounds similar to yours (75% below povery, 10% homeless that we know of) and there are a lot of bad behaviors that are accepted and even necessary at home but just don't fly at school.  It's made a big difference in our school.

Friday FI and I left at 6 am for Arkansas.  :)  We went to our house being built and looked, got our marriage license ($60!!), figured out our cakes, and decided on doors for the house.

Saturday we had to get a couple parts for FI's truck, but also picked out tubs for the house and looked at sinks and things.  I can't wait!!

Sunday we watched them put plywood and plastic up to protect the house, then drove back home to Kansas.  Then I got into it with my mom (grrrrrr) and we went to bed.  :P
