Today's Oprah Show

I am watching Oprah right now and the show is about a big Hollywood director who has given up most of the things he used to have to live a simpler life.  It is pretty cool that he realized that having success in his career and having all of the stuff wasn't fulfilling.  He did a documentary called "I Am".

He quotes St. Augustine as saying, "Determine what God has given you and take from it what you need.  The remainder is needed by others."  I think that's pretty cool.  As a Christian, I struggle with what I have and what others' need and whether or not I'm doing God's will and practicing good stewardship with the things that He has given me.  Even though I feel that I give a lot, I often wonder what would happen if I did even more.  Also, while I am drawn to help others, I have to remind myself that apart from knowing Christ, life is meaningless.  If a person has food, water, shelter and clothing, but does not have Christ, what good is it?

What do you think?

I agree.  And besides, someone who lives on bare necessities and another who lives in luxury are equal in the eyes of the Lord.

But just because a person decides to live a simple life doesn't make them more adept to knowing God.  I think it's a personal choice and if this director felt he was doing good for his life to live simply, that is fine.

That's really cool that he did that! If we all did a small part to help others, it would add up to something big. I think this guy has good intentions. Thanks for sharing!

what a neat story! thank you fo sharing :)
I have struggled with this in the past and spend a lot of money helping my family memebers who are less fortunate. It always feels like I could do more. I know that we will be living a very simple life for the next few years while I am in school so maybe that will be a good opportunitiy to give more back in time while learning to live on less.
