wine for a toast?

I have been trying to come to a decision about having wine at our wedding reception.  Both my fiance and I will have the occasional glass of wine or two and a few of our friends do as well.  My parents are not opposed to the odd glass of wine and neither are his. My pastor is not even opposed to the odd glass of wine!  My concern is that I have an aunt who I would say probably is an alcoholic as well as a couple of friends who are also recovering alcoholics.  Plus my grandmother and another dear old lady from my church would be upset with wine being at the reception.  My fiance and I would like to offer wine with our meal.  I go back and forth between being okay with it (such as when I think through it myself) and when I talk to my mother about it (who says it would be okay with her and my dad but points out that it may offend my grandmother).  Would it be okay to offer wine for a toast as long as there is also a non-alcoholic option?

Re: wine for a toast?

  • I would think it would be fine so long as there is a non alcoholic option as well. Most people assume there is a good chance there will be at a wedding, so anyone that is a recovering alcoholic is already aware that's a choice they will have to make.
  • I think if you have non-alcoholic options (water, sodas, teas, coffee) then it's perfectly acceptable.  You don't need to change what you really want for 3 people - they will be fine and will work it out.
  • We are offering either champagne or sparkling cider for the toasts. We're having a cash bar with beer and wine available for guests. We figured that way, we're not providing, so people can't get mad at us, but it's available if people want it. We also set a very conservative cut off with the bartender.

  • You can't please everyone in this world.  Serve wine, champagne, whatever you like.  It's not like alcoholics aren't exposed to wine when they go out in the world, like to restaurants.  And you shouldn't let a couple of people judge you.  For example, my grandma is Mormon, but that didn't mean she was going to judge me for offering wine.  Now, an open bar might raise more eyebrows (more likely for people to get drunk), but it doesn't sound like you're going to do that.

    I agree with this completely.

  • We only had alcohol for the toast; and offered either champane or sparkling cider.  Our venue didn't allow red wine only white and we weren't that crazy about having white wine only.  As long as you offer options then I think it's fine.

i wouldn't want the recovering people to get uncomfortable or nervous around the wine so i'd not serve it...but that's just me.
  • Thanks for all the helpful posts so far.  Im still not 100% sure what to do...there are so many variables. :(

I don't understand this post. Also wanted to point out that this thread is over a year old. Hopefully the OP got this figured out if she is married now.

ETA: If you have a question, feel free to start a new thread. We'd be glad to help you out if we can.
