clothing donations

I'm desperately trying to get myself to get rid of my old junk (mostly clothes). A fair bit of it is clothing i "designed" or scraps of fabric... are there any organizations that you know will use this stuff? i hate the idea of just tossing things, and I'm sure it can be reused in some way. 

for example, i just gave away a bunch of shoes to an organization that said they would accept everything--scrapped wrecked or "partnerless" shoes to turn into new shoes or bags.

any recommendations? what about those clothing bins outside shop rite?

I give most of our clothes to Good Will or the Women's Shelter that is in our area.
Also, we needed to get rid of our washer and dryer, and we got the name of an organization that will pick up from our church. They do rehabilitation and training for battered women as well.

You can donate any clothes to Salvation Army or Goodwill (if you have those stores nearby).  For the fabric, I think I'd search online to see what you can find in your area.  One thing I know about is Project Linus (they make blankets for sick children and I'm pretty sure they make quilts too) and they may accept donate fabric:

It's great that you are trying to "recycle".  We throw away so much stuff that can be re-used.

What about donating the fabric to an assisted living facility that has a quilting club?  I'm sure they could find a way to use scraps of fabric.  :-)

You could send some clothes down to Tuscaloosa/Birmingham.  After the recent tornadoes, there are a ton of families who lost everything.
