Interesting article

This ran in the Sunday paper here, and I literally could not put it down. It's incredible what some people believe and how important education is.

I'm a bit of an information junkie, and I like sharing interesting and shocking articles when I find them.

I find it shocking that enough people believe those myths that they found it necessary to put it in the paper. It makes me sad that women who don't understand some of those basic facts are having children.

I think the program established in Milwaukee is a good one. Probably expensive for the state, but that's their choice, I suppose.

There is so much ignorance to issues like this and especially among younger people who haven't had as much life experience (not all young people, but most).  I'm not surprised by any of these myths but like Sarah said, it's sad that an article like this is needed.

Those myths are RIDICULOUS. It's upsetting that these ideas needed "dispelled". :(

My mom is a neonatal nurse, and you'd be surprised at some of the stuff she sees and hears.  Babies having to be put in intensive care because their mothers didn't know it was bad to take antidepressants while pregnant and the baby has issues, babies of drug addicted mothers who abused drugs or did methodone the whole time they were pregnant and now the baby is having withdrawals, etc.  And you'd be angry to hear stories of the 18-year-old who is having her thrid baby, smoked and drank the whole pregnancy, and the baby is healthy - and in the next room is the 25-year-old woman who took prenantal vitamins and avoided caffeine and the baby has a serious birth defect.

Sessions: that's the part I can't understand. Some women do terrible things to their body (and baby) and the baby turns out healthy, normal, etc. On the other hand, the woman that desperately wants a baby can't conceive or the baby is ill. It seems really, really unfair. :( God always has a plan but I just wish it still wasn't so heartbreaking.

Now, I'm not saying breastfeeding is "uncivilized" or "unattractive". But I've been in some 100% PUBLIC places where women just flop out their breast & start breastfeeding their child. There are classy ways to do that, where you don't expose yourself to the entire world. That's the only thing I'm really against about breastfeeding.

I can't believe that some people actually think smoking would help a baby! I mean, I thought everyone knew that smoking is bad for pregnant women.

Sessions, that breaks my heart. Does it bother your mom to see all that, or is she kind of de-sensitized about it by now?

My mother is an obstetrician, and sees some of the same stuff as sessions' mom. It bothers her, but she deals with it at home.

MH has been in a pediatric development clinic this month (kids with learning disabilities, etc).  He said the vast majority of the mothers hadn't planned the pregnancy and didn't know they were pregnant until 3 months in.  I know we've talked about women not knowing they're pregnant, but it's sad because that's when things like smoking and drinking cause the most damage.
