Yay found wedding readings (included in post)

Open with this:

WHY MARRIAGE?
~ By: Mari Nichols-Haining ~

Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,
With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body...

Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,
Who won't hold them against me,
Who loves me when I'm unlikable,
Who sees the small child in me, and
Who looks for the divine potential of me...

Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night
With someone who thanks God for me,
With someone I feel blessed to hold...

Because marriage means opportunity
To grow in love in friendship...

Because marriage is a discipline
To be added to a list of achievements...

Because marriages do not fail, people fail
When they enter into marriage
Expecting another to make them whole...

Because, knowing this,
I promise myself to take full responsibility
For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness
I create me,
I take half of the responsibility for my marriage
Together we create our marriage...

Because with this understanding
The possibilities are limitless.

and  this poem which will be read half in spanish half in italian

SONNET XLVIII

Pablo Neruda

Two happy lovers make one bread,
a single moon drop in the grass.
Walking, they cast two shadows that flow together;
waking, they leave one sun empty in their bed.

Of all the possible truths, they chose the day;
they held it, not with ropes but with an aroma.
They did not shred the peace; they did not shatter words;
their happiness is a transparent tower.

The air and wine accompany the lovers.
The night delights them with its joyous petals.
They have a right to all the carnations.

Two happy lovers, without an ending, with no death,
they are born, they die, many times while they live:
they have the eternal life of the Natural.

does anyone else have any good suggestions?  I can't be bothered to continue googling this stuff.

I know nothing about readings and why/how they're included in ceremonies but these are beautiful!!! I'll be in trouble if our pastor gives us the news that we need to choose readings for our ceremony. Btw, I think you mentioned on the latino board that Pablo Neruda has bilingual/ Spanish readings?? Do you have a link just in case?

Thanks Nati!  Well, in all honesty there isn't a particular link to his poems.  They're all over the internet.  I actually found the poem above by googling in italian Pablo Neruda love poems it popped up and then I googled it in Spanish and the translation came up.  I think most of his poems have been translated into English.

I found this other one that's beautiful.

    Is your ceremony religious?

ETA:  Actually, maybe this poem isn't too good, i think the woman is dead.

Hahahahahaha @ your ETA! I haven't read the poem yet but that made me laugh.

Yes our ceremony is religious. He's a pastor from an Evangelist church. Which worried us at first cuz I hear they're a pretty strict community. But I think he's just helping us out and performing somewhat of a non-denominational religious ceremony since we don't actually go to this church. We're still in the pre-marital course stage and we haven't discussed ceremony yet so I have no idea how the ceremony will go. I'm hoping that'll be next week. I don't want to seem pushy since he's doing us a humongous favor... but I need details man! Lol
  • He'll probably have a list of appropriate readings for you.  I am so envious of anyone who has a trained officiant.  My friend officiant and I are like the blind leading the blind planning this thing.

Hahaha oh that's right! Well the bright side is you can make your ceremony exactly what you want it to be! :)
  • Out reading is called 'Union' by Robert Fulgrum. I'll try and add it later. I am on my phone right now.
  • We are doing this one as our non-religous reading (I think I found it via this forum):

The fierce Dinosaur was trapped inside his cage of ice.
Although it was cold he was happy in there. It was, after all, his cage.
Then along came the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
The Lovely Other Dinosaur melted the Dinosaur’s cage with kind words and loving thoughts.
I like this Dinosaur thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
Although he is fierce he is also tender and he is funny.
He is also quite clever though I will not tell him this for now.
I like this Lovely Other Dinosaur, thought the Dinosaur.
She is beautiful and she is different and she smells so nice.
She is also a free spirit which is a quality I much admire in a dinosaur.
But he can be so distant and so peculiar at times, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
He is also overly fond of things.
Are all Dinosaurs so overly fond of things?
But her mind skips from here to there so quickly thought the Dinosaur.
She is also uncommonly keen on shopping.
Are all Lovely Other Dinosaurs so uncommonly keen on shopping?
I will forgive his peculiarity and his concern for things, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
For they are part of what makes him a richly charactered individual.
I will forgive her skipping mind and her fondness for shopping, thought the Dinosaur.
For she fills our life with beautiful thoughts and wonderful surprises. Besides,
I am not unkeen on shopping either.
Now the Dinosaur and the Lovely Other Dinosaur are old.
    Look at them.
Together they stand on the hill telling each other stories and feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs.
And that, my friends, is how it is with love.
Let us all be Dinosaurs and Lovely Other Dinosaurs together.
    For the sun is warm.
And the world is a beautiful place

  • My FI's aunt will be reading my favorite definition of love...it's an excerpt from Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Luis de Bernieres. It's been changed a tiny bit for the wedding.

“love is α temporαry mαdness. it erupts like α volcano αnd then subsides. αnd when it subsides, you hαve to mαke α decision. you hαve to work out whether your roots hαve become so entwined together thαt it is inconceivαble thαt you should ever pαrt. becαuse this is whαt love is. love is not breαthlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgαtion of promises of eternαl pαssion. thαt is just being "in love," which αny of us cαn convince ourselves we αre. love itself is whαt is left over when being "in love" hαs burned αwαy, αnd this is both αn αrt αnd α fortunαte αccident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two."
