Prayers please

I was told on Thursday that I have asthma. I was dealing with symptoms for about a month after DH and I got back from our Hawaii vacation that seemed like bronchitis, but it just never seems to get better at all, so I went to the doctor. They took a chest X-ray and said the inflamation of my lungs was indicative of asthma.

I am a fairly active person, I try(/tried) to work out pretty consistently ... I used to run 5 miles a day and I want so badly to start running races and get back to that level of fitness I used to have, and this has totally thrown me for a loop. I am going to see an allergist to see if it's environmental or if I've developed some kind of allergy that could be causing it.

Please pray that I can either get this under control so I can be active again, or that it's not asthma and just an allergy.

Thank you!

  • Praying!

Just to give you a little extra hope, I have asthma. I have a puffer that I keep on me in the event that I have an attack. I am also preparing to run the Tough Mudder next summer as a step up from half marathons. It can be done, but it does require a lot more diligence/knowledge of your body to be able to stay on top of it :)

I'm so sorry to hear this! I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 5, and was told it would go away when I was an adult. According to my doctor and my mom (she's a nurse) I still have it. Thankfully, mine isn't too bad and I don't use a maintenance inhaler, but I do keep an emergency inhaler on hand just in case. I usually don't show any symptoms unless I just got over a bad cold and it moved into my chest. I work out 3-5 days a week, and never have an issue with tightness or breathing.

From the sounds of it, you probably just have a slight case of asthma that can be controlled and shouldn't interfere with exercise unless you're fighting a cold or an upper respitory virus. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you'll need a maintenance inhaler or just an emergency one to keep in your purse. You should be able to keep in under control so you can get back into your normal workout routine once you've kicked whatever cold you may have had.

Prayers that you'll feel better soon, and you don't get frequent asthma attacks.
  • Asthma is very controlable.  Fortunately, there are lots of medicines out there to help you.  The time of year may also be making it bad, as there is often a lot of air pollution which worsens things (especially if you're here on the East Coast).  I hope you feel better!
  • Your level of activity has very little to do with your asthma diagnosis. The fact that you run meaning you shouldn't have asthma is a huge misconception.

Allergic asthma and stress induced asthma are very common and easily controlled. See a pulmonary doctor or an asthma and allergy specialist. Get allergy tests done to rule that out.

GL! I've been struggling with my asthma since I was diagnosed at 1 year old. It gets better once you get over the diagnosis!

  • I agree with PP's. I'll say a prayer for you!
  • I agree with the other PP.  I'll be praying.

BTW I had asthma and I played soccer for three years.  I'd take puffs on my inhaler between time in and I was fine.  I never had to go to the hospital.  It's totally possible to be active.
