Addressing Envelops

I've been dreading this task but I'm going to dive in today.

How are people addressing their envelops? Are you doing something like this"

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Or

Mr. John and Mrs. Jane Smith

Or

Mr John Smith and Mrs. Jane Smith

Or

Mr. John Smith and Family

Gah.. so confused on what I should do.  Help!

    if they're married:

    Mr and Mrs. John Smith

If you're inviting their family (children under 18 as per "proper etiquette")
      Mr. John Smith and Family

    2 people who live together:

Ms. Jane Smith and Mr John Doe (girl first same line)

    Dating:
    Ms Jane Smith
Mr John Doe  (depends on whose house your sending it to, person who lives there go first)

EDIT:  I'm not doing inner-envelopes so all my info is going on the mailing envelope.

  • Mr. and Mrs. John Smith if the couple is married and share a last name.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family and then inner envelope will have each family member's name written out.

Mr. John Smith and Ms. Jane Doe if the couple is in a relationship and unmarried. I will list the person that we are closer to first on the envelope, not necessarily the man always.

Mr. John Smith and then on the inner envelope: Mr. John Smith and Guest if they're single.

    Does that make sense?

  • I agree with PPs. I think strictly speaking you're not supposed to split up the man's name (if that makes sense?). So, if you're being less formal, you'll want to write Jane and John Doe, rather than John and Jane Doe (since then "John" and "Doe" would be split up).

I'm going the formal route, so I'll be doing Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.

  • Ditto Nancy... I'm not doing inner envelopes, either.

    I'm also dreading this task.
