Wedding Woes

WWYT of a 6 year old boy that only has 1 non-rotten tooth in his mouth.

A lady that I work with told me that her son has a mouth full of rotten teeth, and I'm giving her a major side eye for this. He has only 1 healthy tooth in his mouth.

Why would she tell people that? Sounds like neglect to me.

how do HER teeth look? At 6 he should not only be brushing but seeing the dentist.

Is there a medical reason for this?  I know there are people, like my FIL, who have horrible teeth, and he's taken very good care of them.  It's a genetic thing.  Actually,  DH has awful teeth too.  I would bet by the time he's in his mid-40's, he's going to have several fake teeth.  And again, DH takes good care of his mouth too.

But if it's because she's never encouraged good oral hygiene or eating habits, then that's just awful.  That poor boy.

You don't have bad teeth at 6. Those are his baby teeth. Maybe she's hoping that set will fall out soon and she can start fresh.

I'm surprised because she's very involved with her kids, but I think she lets him eat whatever he wants and it's tons of sugar.

That's so horrible.  My IL's friend's daughter was 4 when she had two rotted teeth in the front of her mouth...She ended up with a abcess and had to have major oral surgery.  At 4?!  It's b/c the grandparents and the mom  let her (and her sister) eat whatever TF they wanted and never kept up with hygiene habits.

But then again, it's not surprising considering the state of their house anytime I've been there.  :-/

perhaps she thinks dentists are a luxury (along with toothbrushes and floss)

Ya'll, don't you know dential care is a luxury? Not everyone can afford your elitist toothbrushes and toothpaste.

She says that she makes him brush his teeth and he goes to the dentist, but something isn't working.

I think the dentist talked about her bad.

I had a cap at the age of 4.  Not because I had bad oral hygiene but because I have soft teeth and my teeth were too close together.  Yes, I was a 4 year old pirate.

People need to be careful with those abcesses. There was a boy here that died from one a few years back. The infection traveled from his mouth, up his head and right into his brain. He was only, like, 11 or something.

i bet he drinks a lot of fruit juice.

my old boss's kid was like this -- more cavities than teeth.  grandma "watched' him during the day and she was letting him have juiceboxes all day.

My friends were guardians of a 4 year old who had rotted out teeth. The mom BF'd him and would let him fall asleep while nursing. She also fed him tons of sugar and didn't do a thing about hygiene. Poor baby had to have all of his front teeth removed and caps on the others. If it hadn't been for my friends he never would have seen a dentist. The mom, btw, is in and out of jail.

Economic status doesn't always make a difference though. I baby-sat a brother and sister ages 5 and 3 who each had several fillings. The mom bought all this supposedly healthy crap yet the shelves and drawers were load with candy and chips. The kids were spoiled brats too. I think I've mentioned the boy before and his cheese only phase.
