Ok DG, I'll play nice. It wasn't the use of the word 'bother' it's the point that you used the term 'angry' to describe a black man who fights for equality. Why does he have to be angry because he wants equality? Is it because he's vocal? I don't understand that and it pisses me off when someone says someone else is 'angry' because they don't sit back quietly and write letters. I'd be damned angry if I were told I was being arrested for being disorderly IN MY HOME that I PAY FOR after you realized it was my home.

Sometimes black people who are angry about racism come off as hating white people (HisE, I'm looking in your direction) just as some women who are angry about sexism come off as hating men.

Also, as a feminist, there are moments when I even feel like I hate men (in theory, but not individually).  I wonder if black people feel the same way about white people.

As a feminist, I had the pendulum shift from "men are dogs" to "gender is a prison no matter how you slice it." That came more from forcing me to learn about "the other half" than anything. It's never just black-and-white, and women are just as capable of misogyny.Case in point:I'd like to think that, as an eminent scholar in his field, his insight might be a little more sophisticated than "Ooh, White Devil!"

Lurker coming out of the woodwork.  Based on the information given by the media, I see no way that the officers participated in racial profiling.  They responded to a call as is required of them.  Once there they must identify the person as the owner of the home.  Instead of producing ID he was disorderly.  One media outlet said he produced a Harvard ID, which of course would not have his address on it.He wasn't disorderly because he was being arrested.  He was disorderly because he felt racially profiled against.  If he was, it was the woman who made the call, not the cops who were profiling.  He was then arrested because he was disorderly.  Finally providing an ID after verbally abusing the police, absolves him of the B & E, not the disorderly.  That law is there for a reason, which is to help the police do their job.  If the police are trying to assess a situation and people involved are being belligerent, it is often only the threat of a disorderly charge that will make them calm down and allow the police to figure out what is going on.Since Obama, in his own words, didn't know the whole situation he should have kept his opinion to himself.  He is making the police officer look bad and all he was doing was his job.

kuus, sometimes I hate white people, but I hate black people with just as much vim and vigor.

The neighbor was actually someone from Harvard, so it's not clear what actually happened. I'm the whitest white that ever whited and my husband is too. If Mr1day got the cops called on him by the swamp yankees that we live near, he'd be belligerent too. The cops may not have been racially motivated but Dr. Gates may have experienced racial discrimination in his past and this time may have just caused him to snap. Labeling theory is at work here. I've been giving DG side eye for a while now so her comments didn't surprise me. Institutional racism isn't a myth.
