Rant: I hate my bank.

They just charged me with 9 overdraft fees. Thats right I said 9! I accidently charged a purchase to my debit card that should have been charged to my credit card, but I missed a step on amazon.com which is my own fault. So 2 of those are ones that because of my own stupidity I should have been charged. The other 7 transactions didn't even come close to over drafting my account.

Thats $203 that my bank owes me. I'm so pissed off right now, I can't even put it into words. I have had this account for just under a year and it seems like for the last 6 months I've had to go in at least once a week to have one fixed that they charged me when my account never went into the negative.

I use a local small bank and they have an old system and finally this is the last straw. I will be taking my $3.99 left of my paycheck to another bank tomorrow so I don't have to deal with this shiit anymore.

wow. that really sucks. i always pretend that i have less money than I actually do so this never happens. do you and your DH share an account? If so, that messes with things if you aren't careful.

I would definately switch banks but if you overdraft a lot, banks aren't really wanting to reverse those lately.

also, this girl i work with over drafts a lot and she says that if she pays a bill for like 300 and puts little things like 5 bucks here and there on her account, it will pay the 300 first and overdraft all the little ones. yikes!

i hope you get things figured out! good luck!

I don't overdraft a lot. I get charged ones that should never have been charged. My banks system is ANCIENT so if it goes below a certain point it overdrafts it whether or not you actually did overdraft it. The 2 were of my own stupidity for not making sure I was charging the correct card. I haven't overdrafted that account for a long time. They just like charging me things that didn't happen.

Luckily this is my personal account and not our joint account. But still I shouldn't get charged 7 overdraft fees for things that I still had money in the account for.

Luckily I have a friend who works at the bank so she just goes in and reverses the ones that shouldn't have occured. But still I will be switching to another as soon as they open today.

You should totally call them and explain, and politely ask them to forgive the extras.  Before I was with a CU, I was with a bank that if you called, they'd forgive stuff like this about once a year - you just couldn't do it all the time.

Also, I don't have time to look it up, but there was recent legislation passed in Congress about how and when they can charge overdrafts, so you may want to check and see if they're even doing it according to the law.  That would help you on your call.

And when you're done with all that, leave the dark side behind, and join a CU.  They're like a bajillion times better about stuff like this...  :)

Several years ago, I had gotten tired with BofA and was with WaMu for a year and then had a similar thing happen where they paid out a large charge then hit me with overdrafts for smaller charges.  They refused to reverse it, so I paid it and closed the account and went back to BofA for a year before I switched everything over to my CU that I've actually been with since '99 (used to be Safeway CU then became Qualstar CU).  I second Carrie and CUs - couldn't be happier with a financial institution.  Plus, I get to use ATMs that belong to another CU in the network without getting charged an ATM fee http://www.cuswirl.com/ .  I suggest looking into it if you will be changing.

The only problem I have with CU's is Randal had an account with one and they were the rudest financial institution I have ever been into. Plus from that website the closest one is an hour drive from where I am. We do have a CU on the Island but its the one that I won't go back to because of the issues Randal had with them.

I really don't want to have to go to Seattle or Bremerton everytime I need to go to the bank. It looks like I will be going with Wells Fargo. I have an account with Chase and the only reason I haven't closed it is because all our bills are pre authorized to come out of it every month.

I don't know what CU your husband was with, but I really love BECU. Their customer service is fantastic, they don't charge for anything, and they have good rates. They keep putting more and more of their neighborhood financial centers up, so you might want to check them out (if it's not the one you're talking about).

Sorry about this while mess! I'm so glad I don't have to deal with it. Because my dad was in the airforce he joined USAA and passed it on to us kids. I can't say enough about them I LOVE LOVE LOVE them! You should see if you might be eligable for them. You never know! good luck finding a new bank. I hope your current one gives you back your money!!

I second BECU, they are great.  You can even set it up to pay loans you have with other banks automatically and transfer money to other banks.  Wamu didn't let you do that so I love this feature as my auto loan is at another CU and FI uses another bank so it's nice to easily (and electronically) shuffle money between 3 banks for free.

Go credit unions! :) Sorry I had to cheer. I love BECU too. That is difficult being on the island though. You might want to look into something on the main land if you guys can get direct deposit. If you can't I can understand keeping in local. Even tough you would probably get charge a fee for using the ATM on the island it still might save you money overall if you find some where that has fewer fees and better deposit rates.
