Wedding Woes

Zilla

Sorry. I got crazy over here, and my tea is cold.Ok. These are my feelings on tithing. I view tithing as giving God my First Fruits(yes, it is biblical based) but I'm sure many people don't agree.Anyway, before I pay my bills, myself, and hit the mall, I tithe 10% of my paycheck to God. Yes, I'm bringing the money to church, but that's God's house, so that's where it goes. Yes, I also give to charity, and to other offerings to the church, but that is in additon to my tithes.I think that there are many types of offerings that you can give to God, but tithes are the 1st most important in my eyes.I have been a faithful tither for years, and have been so finanically blessed in my life. Tithes are in good times and bad. Meaning, when you lose your job, you should be even more faithful in your tithing. Is it hard? Yes, at times it can be, but the rewards are so much bigger than the sacrifice. IMOI could give you so many examples, but it would make for a very long post.:)I can live off of 90% well, and most people can. I agree that I don't think God wants you to have debt, and save. I believe that he wants us all to be responsible with what he has given us, and it is a slap in the face to waste and mistreat your money.I tithe not only for myself, but for my family, my kids I haven't had yet. I want blessings for them as well. Does God bless people that don't tithe? of course, but I'm all about having a deeper relationship with God. I want all that he has in store for my life, and I want him to know that I put in first in all areas of my life. That includes my pocket. As far as poor people tithing? Heck yeah they should? You want a financial breakthrough in your life, but you're going to also show with your actiions that. "God I want you to bring me through this, but times is hard, and I have to think about myself first." Is is easy, no? However, faith isn't always easy. Plus, God might have a financial blessing coming your way, and through your actions, you're not prepared for it.

Re: Zilla

  • sure, it's way Faith exists, because there's the hope for that breakthrough. but it's not guaranteed to happen in a timely manner, and the IRS and medical bills won't wait for that epiphany. it also comes off as relying on something else to get you through when you certainly have the power to do it yourself.Zilla, I guess that's where our difference of opinion lies. I don't think that I have the power to do anything by myself. Meaning, I'm a saver, educated, have a good job, don't 12 kids, and yes these were decisions that I made. However, God provided everything that I have in my life, from my family to my job that landed in my lap. I don't think that I have sole power over my life, and I'm so glad that I don't. I trust God's plan for my life so much more than my own. I would be so messed up without my faith. MESSED UP. For reals.

  • I agree with you Nola and this is what we do also. It isn't always easy, and sometimes I mess up and don't give my 10% because I am worried about paying something else. But when I tithe first like I am supposed to it always seems easier to pay everything else.
  • I see tithing as an act of faith.  You give the money to God because HE asks for it, not because of what you want to happen or are afraid will happen if you don't.  It bothers me though when people think that they are paying into God's lottery or something.  If you get some unexpected money from somewhere, it isn't because you tithed.  And you shouldn't stop tithing just because you can't see how God is helping you.  It's faith, not a 401(k).  The $1K/month lady made a comment about tithing as if it is her annual bribe to God to be nice to them.

  • Zilla, you would also be amazed how things have a way of working out. Example: When I first started tithing, I seemed to always have money left over each month. This never seemed to happen before. Plus, I started just getting money. A check for $300 from a policy that my parents had for me as a kid. A big pay raise that school year. It showed me that I was doing the right thing.

  • Ditto Zilla. I have to say it, but the way Nola is talking is why I have a problem with religion. Religion =/= a business. And the concept of giving to get back (in a roundabout way) is just absurd. Give because you want to help (God or whoever/whatever the offering will go for), don't give to make yourself look all shiny and righteous so that God will use his mighty safety net to catch you when you fall on hard times.

  • Zilla, I agree with you. Does God bless people that don't tithe? of course, but I'm all about having a deeper relationship with God.We are all God's children. I don't have more of an IN than anyone else. I'm only talking about my personal relationship. Z, yes, it's not a 401K. Hee

  • Ladies, these convos never go well over the internet. I think it's better to have them in person, because you are never going to explain yourself well by typing. Tithing to me is not a safety net, 401K or puts me ahead of the line. I'll just leave it at that.

  • Zilla, you know we are always cool.
