Moms- Childbirth Class questions

When did you register for your classes? The hospital I'm delivering at isn't super huge, and I pulled up the list of when classes are in the spring and it appears that they have only 2 classes each month available on Saturday. There really is no way that we can do a Wednesday night as DH absolutely has to be at work till 6:30 pm and the classes start at 6. Anyways, am I fool for signing up now? I'm going to ask the OB's office in a few weeks.

Re: Moms- Childbirth Class questions

  • Sign up now, if you don't and it fills up you'll regret it.
  • I signed up in May for the class that began in June (2 months before my due date).  My doctor recommended I sign up months before in case they fill up.It just depends on your location and how bad you want to make sure you get in the class.
  • I think it depends on what class you're looking into. If you're really wanting to go natural, then forget about the "Lamaze" and most other hospital based classes (at least in my area). They're pretty useless and just an overview of the process of childbirth, with some hospital propaganda thrown in. Have you looked into Bradley method? That is some serious preparation and I would start those classes a lot sooner than your typical childbirth class. I also highly rec a book by Ina May Gaskin - it isn't a birthing method, but she gives lots of tips and other things that I wouldn't have ever considered.
  • We signed up the week before, but we live in NPR.  Childcare doesn't rank really high with mothers here.  ;)

  • FWIW, I didn't get much out of my childbirth class that my books didn't tell me.  I am glad I took it for the experience, but I could have just saved the $60.For the record, I don't think I'm an expert on birthing babies by any means.  I think I would have benefitted more from a different type of class.I did get to experience the weird orgy-like breathing and moaning of my classmates and their partners during our practice times, so there's that.
  • It's okay to sign up now.  At least you know you'll get a spot.  You will hear varying opinions on the "worth" of the classes.  Our class was only ~$20.  We got some freebies, a tour of the facility, pre-registration, books, etc.  It was worth it just to see DH in the sympathy belly.
