When your 16, going on 17...

You want a vibrator... and to tell your mom about it.  Or at least this girl does. Dear Prudie,I'm 16 years old and have an awkward dilemma. I'm thinking about buying a vibrator because I am very curious, but the thing is, I want to talk to my mom about it first. We have a very close and open relationship, and she says I can talk to her about anything. I'm just not sure about this. I'm scared that it will make her feel awkward (even though she's a nurse, so she likes talking about gross stuff). I already tried talking to one of my best friends about it, but she seemed pretty repulsed by the idea. I'm still a virgin and not planning to change that for quite some time, so it's not like I'm going to be romping around with teenage boys. The vibrator would be for my own private use, and having my mom to talk to first would be especially helpful to me. Should I tell her?—Just Curious

Well, you have to give her props for a) realizing that masturbation is preferable to sleeping with men at her age and b) that she wants to be open with her motherThat being said, I would have died. So would Mom.

I would have procured it through other means, maybe an aunt or some older friend.  But it's healthier than sex.

Hmm.  There's a lot in this letter.  It's good she wants to talk to her mom, but the fact she says "gross stuff" makes me wonder.  It's also good she doesn't want to sleep around, but something seems odd about wanting a vibrator at 16. (and now that song is stuck in my head)

Good for her for wanting to discover her body before getting involved with men. I think if more women did this they'd have better sex lives. She needs to talk to a cool aunt or older friend/cousin, mom is way too close to the situation and although they're close, she may not be ready to handle such a conversation.I hope I can be that cool aunt to my nieces.

What I'm trying to figure out is what she would gain from telling mom.  I mean, is she going to ask for technique tips or something?  I give her props for wanting one vs. wanting to go out and find peen, but keep it on the DL.

Well, now that I think of it...The places where you would be able to buy a vibrator are probably 18 and over and I'm guessing she might not have a CC, so ordering online may be out of the question.  And if a package (har, har) arrived for her, that may garner questions from mom anyway.  Hmmm...I guess that would be a dilemma.  She could always do the Samantha from SATC thing and get a personal massager for that use.

I'm very close to my mom, but that would not be a topic of conversation. For not only my sake, but my mom's as well. Some things my mom doesnt want to know.

I bet you don't have to be 18 to buy one at Spencer's.
