Dance lessons

Just wanted you ladies to know of the awesome deal I found. Arthur Murray studios does a "first dance" package. You get a 30 min consultation appt where they figure out your style and what you want. Then there's 2 half-hour private sessions, and a 40-minute group session. Best part? Only $59 for the couple. Best deal I could find!

We're going in for our consultation on Friday, and we're going to bring the music we want for our first dance, and they will come up with something that goes with it.

WAIT!  Before you buy that: http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.667537/n.2/it.A/id.598/.f?sc=31&category=738

I got that off myseattleperks.com a few weeks ago.  It does take them about a week or so to mail it to you though, just an FYI.

Oh I'm excited. i have a question. Can you schedule them any time?
  • edited December 2011
So I just got off the phone with them and they want us to get the 3-2-1 package for $200. Three private lessons, two group, and one social dance event. The lady did not know about the coupon and said that wasn't really to prepare you for your first dance. Now, I don't know what to do?

Ditto Jennuinne.  That's a downside to Arthur Murray that I've heard about. Be prepared for sales tactics.

So I should just buy the deal that tygirl posted? How else is buying that deal for first dance lessons?
  • edited December 2011
I dont think I'm going to buy the deal, just because I like the consultation part of the package that Arthur Murray has, and that they'll customize the dance to what we're doing. I still think $59 is a great deal. And the lady that I've been talking to over email (at the Federal Way location) has been nothing but super nice and not pressuring, so that's a bonus there.

Jamers - who are you working with?  How do they have the lessons set up?  Is it only certain times, etc?

Her name is Shannon at the Federal Way studio. She said that we can schedule our sessions for any time that works for us. I told her evenings are the most convenient, and she said that was fine. We're going in for our consultation on Friday at 7:45pm. They're open pretty late, which works out perfect for us.

She said that usually for the consultation, the bride and whoever is helping her plan the wedding will come in, meet with them, and they get an idea of what we want for our dance. She said that usually, the groom doesnt really come to that... which I thought was weird, because its his dance too. I told her that FI would be com ing with me, that he needs the most help. :) Then we have the private sessions. And for the group class, we can attend whatever class we want. As far as I know, that means the Salsa, Ballroom, etc classes. She also mentioned that since FI was coming with me to the consult, we could have our first session right away, but I dont know if we're going to do that. I'll keep you updated.

I've heard about them being super pushy and stuff... but so far, i havent experienced any of it.

We took lessons from the Arthur Murray in Everett and I have to say we were disappointed. They too told us they would help us customize our first dance. They didn't listen to us as far as what we wanted our first dance to be like. They just did what they wanted to do. Another problem for us was that we were given our lessons while other lessons were going on. Our instructor would put on the song we had chosen for our 1st dance, and one of the other instructors would go over and stop it in the middle of the song and put on what they wanted for the lesson they were giving. That made it pretty tough when we were trying to learn a slow dance while listening to salsa music! Not to mention every time we were there they were constantly giving us a sales pitch to buy more lessons. It was annoying. We were so disappointed we never used our last 2 lessons. I hope you have a better experience than we did. Each location may be different. I just wanted to pass along our experience.
*Edit* I would definitely as them what their definition of "private" lessons are. Like I said we had our own instructor, but there were other lessons going on on the same floor with only one sound system.
