Randoms

- FIL and SMIL are bringing the new frig today.  I need to clean up a bit but was forced to pop a benadryl.  Now I just hope the kids don't tie me up.

- New furniture comes tomorrow!  I've got all of baby's clothes washed and folded and ready to put in the drawers.  I'm more excited this time then with the other two.

- I had carpet cleaners out yesterday to try to clean the paint spot.  When the guy was figuring the bill he asked if I had a calculator with a percent sign.  Both guys had phones, but the phone doesn't have a % and they didn't know how to calculate the sales tax.  He accused me of knowing voodoo magic.  I accuse his middle school of failing him.

Re: Randoms

  • -Yay for a new frig!  LOL @ the picture in my mind of your ILs showing up and you tied up on the couch.
    -Yay for new furniture!
    -Middle School failure indeed!

    My randoms
    - I saw a middle-aged Buddhist monk at the grocery store last night in his safron robe....with matching safron Crocs.
    - I have a terrible cough and went to the dr. to get codeine cough syrup.  I took some in the very early morning and I'm at work with a cough syrup hang over.  I might nod off.

    yay fridge.

And definately a midle school math fail.

And I would wear coordinating saffron crocs if I had to wear robes taht were already a fashion disaster :P

    Mine:
-Someone frickin stole my box of kleenex.  I provide them for the tutoring center--I buy them and get reimbursed (although at least 1/2 the time I don't bother to get reimbursed).  The box was new last week and some asshat stole it over the weekend.  So I've resorted to stealing a partial roll fo TP from the bathroom and I' hostile.

    -I need allergy meds.

-My child can now climb out of the crib she uses at my folk's house.  This bodes ill for nap times for the rest of the year :-P

-My husand and I have been married 9 years and he STILL doesn't realize that conversations we have in bed in the AM before I"m vertical don't count.  He insists we talked about something this morning.  And that I answered.  I BELIEVE him, but, I can do that in my sleep.  i have no recolection of this conversation.
  • Yay for new fridge!  We need a new one desparately, but I can't make up my mind what I want.  I can buy furniture and paint colors for the rest of the house in a day, no problem.  But the kitchen?  Somehow I can't do a danged thing for it w/out freezing up.

I suck at figuring out percentages.  I can DO it, but I'll round up to an easy 10 or 5 to do so or use a trick.

I'm laughing at GBCK's morning convo.

It's fall and I'm wearing new boots!  Yay!
  • Nola- I'm 30 wksish.  I'll delver sometime the week of Dec 17.

Ha at the morning conversation!  I want new boots V, but it's not in the budget.

I have no idea what the frig looks like.  The spare one died during the summer storm so this is just a new back up.  We asked FIL to keep a look out and he picked up this for $150.  My only need was that it be big enough for a platter in the frig part and a cookie sheet in the freezer.  Stupid side by side freezer won't fit the cookie sheet.

  • I can only figure percentages in tens.  Of course, I don't really get the percent button on a calculator, either. So I usually leave the math to anyone else in the vicinity.

  • Neither of us were doing it in our heads.  I was using my phone.  He didn't realize that 6.35% was the same thing as 0.0635.

  • Yeah, I never use the % button. I passed middle school, yo.

I was just helping a kid figure out his average in his class. He was all kinds of confused, poor baby?

<div>My brain doesn't like decimals, so I always do the latin break down...per cent = per 100.</div><div>So then I create the tiny cross-multiplication chart in my head.  </div><div>(I am aware this is WAY mroe work.  But it clicks better for me.)</div><div>
    </div><div>so...if it was $135.00</div><div>
</div><div>x/135 = 6.35/100  (this would be beter if it looked like this, but I don't know if it will look right once I hit submit:</div><div>
    </div><div><u>x_</u>       =     <u>6.35</u>___</div><div>135               100</div><div>
    </div><div>then cross multiply </div><div>100* x =  6.35 * 135</div><div>
    </div><div>x = (6.35*135) /100</div><div>
    </div><div>Which is the same thing in more steps. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" /></div>
  • GB, I have another way to figure that is a lot of steps too.

If something is 70% off, I'll take 7, multiple it by however many tens are in the price (so if $40, take $7 x 4 tens = 28 off), subtract 28 from 40, so $12.  It's longer, but I can keep track of this in my head for some reason.  You can up it to 100s pretty easily too.
  • Makes sense for me--if they're in 10's especially.  (harder for 4.3% or whatever)

In my state, sales tax is 6% so, my very math deficient sister has orders from me that her tip should be "triple the tax, round up, and add a dollar"
Which, for mid-range restaurants, makes her leave a 20-25% tip, more or less.

Iths the only way she knows it.   It's been working for the last 10 years or so for her--she's screwed when traveling elsewhere though.

If you turn the phone sideways, you get a gajillion more buttons, including % and square root and logs, sin, cos, tan, etc.

I assume just about every phone calculator app works this way, anyway. All 3 of mine do.
ETA: Yes, that's a major middle school math fail. And I'll confess I don't really know how to use a % button. I always convert to decimals.

<div>works on the calculator on the computer too.</div><div>(well, I mean, you can get to it.  Not by turning sideways but start>run>calc brings up the calculator and view-scientific brings you the rest of the commonly used math keys--the % is already there I think)</div>
  • V- If something is 70% off multiply by 0.3 and you skip the subtracting crap.  40*3=120 move the decimal point one spot and you've got $12
  • Children also don't know how to tell time. Put a clock in front of them, and see how long it takes to figure it out.

They all say they just look on their phones, or wear digital watches. smh

  • yeah, my mother does it that way, 6.

I always think it's interesting to see how people's different minds work.

If I have something that's like 6.5, I just round it up to the 7.  The .5 isn't going to make enough of a difference.
