I know there are some Douglas Preston & LIncoln Childs/Pendergast series fans.
The new one, Cold Vengeance, is so-so. It's not that it's badly written, but they're really starting to change the Pendergast character and scenario. It's going into the conspiracy theory thriller genre. While I love a good conspiracy thriller, what I loved about Pendergast was the archeology, science, museum and modern Sherlock Holmes aspect.
Pendergast is all over the place now, finding a World War II Nazi conspiracy and acting the action hero, shooting half a dozen men on a boat with magically placed gymnastics and bullets and other feats of spy thriller action rather than Sherlock Holmes. And I know I should be for character development, but I want smart Pendergast back...not good shot Pendergast.
One thing I was super happy to see is that they have brought back Corrie Swanson from Still Life with Crows. She's probably one of my favorite characters in the series and I've been wondering about her. Constance is also back, as well as a continuance of the characters picked up in Cold Fever.
One rant re: books right now: I would like to read ONE book and have it COMPLETE the story. I don't mind if characters are carried over, as a matter of fact it's one thing I always loved about early Terry Brooks and early LIncoln/Childs and Richard Patterson. But this nonsense of ending a book on a cliffhanger is getting annoying. Most of the time I feel like they have a story in mind, split it into three parts and then add filler to make it book length.
