July 2012 Weddings

First fitting... major alterations.. budget blown and freaking out.

So I had planned for $300 in alterations - figuring this would be the TOP end.... I had my first fitting last night and the total came to just over $350.  Not that 50 dollars is a super huge amount but I was just shocked.  My dress does not fit my body at all - it fits in the waist and that is about it.  The seamstress assured me that all will be fine -she is going to put a corset back in, take the small train off and take in the chest area so it lays flatter against me.  She made a joke about a paper I had to sign... "this gives me permission to ruin your dress"... wow - really?  What if she ruins it?  She said its going to take her a long time -and my next fitting isnt until July 2nd.  So now I have over a month to worry about it.  I know its all going to be okay but I could barely breathe from being so overwhelmed last night.

  • What did the form that you signed say? I didn't have to sign anything like that for mine.

  • When is your wedding? From your ticker I'm thinking the 28th but I can't do math this early.  That still gives you almost a whole month to finish the alterations.  What did you have to sign?

    Anniversary
  • Sorry to hear about that. It sucks when things go over budget

  • I'm so sorry this is happening to you, how stressful!  If it is any consolation at all I was in a wedding last summer and the gal kept loosing weight (not on purpose....lucky, I know!) and her first fitting was a disaster and they were working all the way up until a couple days before the wedding....she looked gorgeous and you couldn't tell there had ever been an issue.
    Sending good thoughts your way.

  • I'm getting my alterations at the Alfred Angelo signature store.  It was a paper that gave the seamstress permission to do the work.  Seemed pretty standard and I understand why its needed but it still freaks me out.  I know it'll be okay- I had just hoped for a more positive experience.  The seamstress is so sweet though along with everyone at the store.  I can't say enough good things about the AA store here.
  • I wouldn't worry about it- I'm sure she knows what she's doing! Let her do her job and you just relax. I'm also July 28th and I haven't even taken my dress in yet.

I got my dress at AA here and I wish I had gotten my dress somewhere else. Plus from what I saw alterations would cost me an arm and a leg for my dress ($800) so I am glad things work out for you. I am also a July 28th bride. I just got my first fitting like 2 weeks ago and I am not going back until sometime in the middle of June for my second fitting then after that I don't pick up my dress until the week of the wedding so breath, relax and everything will be fine.

  • Don't be worried about the timeline. My first fitting was in mid-April, my second one was this past weekend and my next fitting isn't till June 23rd. About a month between fittings is standard, I think, especially in wedding season.
