Yes, people make lemonade tableside.  I worked in a lot of restaurants.  The only people that cut lemons with a knife were bartenders and barbacks.  Everyone else had a gadget that popped the whole thing at once.

I'm also going to guess the lemon isn't the worse thing on the table.

if you're working for tips, you want to stab them w/ a spork for doing this.
(headache, mess, and they shave $2 off the bill which shaves off the tip...)

I am far too lazy to do this. If I am going out, I don't want to do the work myself that night.

    And germs are everywhere, meh.

Well, i don't like lemonade or lemons on my drinks so this won't be an issue for me, but I have seen many many many people do this.

Diabetics who don't want the only sugar free soda on the menu, unsweetened tea, or water do this a lot. Or maybe I just know a lot of diabetics.

seriously, a year of retail and a year of waiting tables should be mandatory for all of humanity.

I worked in a lot of restaurants too. I just never considered squeezing a wedge of lemon into your drink as a way to scam the restaurant. It takes a lot more than a sixth of a lemon and a packet of sugar to turn water into lemonade. Granted, I hated water drinkers, but I didn't put them on the same level as people who asked for extra chips and salsa and a to-go container.

TD- I had people use a whole lemon practically.  One wedge wouldn't phase me, a whole lemon was annoying and yes, a scam.

oops.  Guess you would have hated me.  Not so much the extra chips and salsa, but water and to-go containers, almost always.  For me, it's not about being cheap - I'm trying to wean off sodas and don't like tea.  And if I don't finish my meal, I definitely get a container.  Or were you talking about folks who got extra chips and salsa just to put in a to-go?  I can see how that would be annoying.

I always tip extra if I order water.  I may not pay for a $2.99 glass of iced tea, but I'll give the waiter an extra buck for refilling my water glass three times.

But I mentioned this when out to eat with my family once and now I am openly mocked for it although I still think it is a good idea.  Of course waiters don't know that an extra tip is coming and probably still spit in my water.

No, I was talking about people who take free chips and salsa to go. Obviously if you don't finish your meal you should box it up. I also understand now that a lot of people just prefer water. I often just prefer water. But I also tip 15% for horrible service and 20% for average service.
