There was a really interesting article response to this about how many people really are born with extra somethings.  It's more common than you think, it's just that we remove it all the time.  They had an x-ray of someone's hands who had six digits on one hand and seven on the other.  I can't remember where I read it, but the x-rays that they had were fascinating.

Growing up I knew someone who adopted from *somewhere-asian country, no idea which one, I was like 7, so I listened to vauge hand waving about it* and one of the reasons they were placed w/ the child is that the birth-parents decided that the baby was evil because she had 6 toes on each foot.

And a a 7 year old, I was sorely disappointed I didn't get to see the baby toes until the extras were removed.
