IMO, Getting new boobs after a mastectomy is reconstructive, and therefore not completely elective.

I guess my line is "who cares" as in, if you have a giant scar from having a cancer removed from your face, people are either going to stare or ask about it. If you don't have boobs, people are going to wonder why. If you have boobs that are just small, you're probably the only person who cares. Self consciousness related to having love handles is completely different from self-consiousness related to having a terminal illness that led to disfiguring surgery.

I guess therapy would help in both situations, but I can see reconstructive surgery as being a big part of recovery for cancer patients.

Just curious. Also: I agree, and give FI a hearty side eye over thinking breast reconstruction after mastectomy is elective.

For some reason, my first thought regarding reconstruction surgery is akin to insurane.  It's to take you back to what you had, not improve upon.
