I do it completely by accident/nerves/etc. I do not intend to be mean, I promise.
So there is a woman I kind of know. I've met her several times as we have mutual friends. The last time I saw her she was telling me about how they discovered her son's peanut allergy. He had been at a birthday party and was licked in the face by the birthday boy's dog. A few mintues later he was being rushed to the emergency room and they were trying to figure out what could have caused it. A few days later the owner of the dog mentioned to her that her dog had just eaten a peanut butter sandwhich before licking the kid...could he possible have a peanut allergy. I said, "that is so funny!" meaning "That is so bizarre! What dog eats peanut butter sandwiches?" But she got a bad look on her face and said, "No, it's really not funny. He could have died." I stammered and tried to save myself but just changed the subject.
I saw her again yesterday. I was shocked that she was still willing to speak to me. I haven't seen her in months but heard through the mutual friends that they got a call about a month ago that their adoption came through and they were flying to pick up a new baby. So yesterday when she came up to me with all smiles (and there were two babies being passed around the room, I assumed one was hers) I at least had the forethought to not ask which was her baby, but I said "I hear that you've had a busy summer!" She got a bad look on her face again and sighed. Then she started talking about random other stuff. I talked to her for a long time and the adoption never came up. I don't know if it fell through or what, but I have a feeling I said the absoulte wrong thing.
She has an older son who was at this party yesterday and a man accidentally slammed the kids fingers in a door (kid had been making a game of running in and out everytime an adult opened the door). My only thought was "oh man, I can't believe that wasn't me."
And then you might recall me cheerfully asking a guy a few months ago where his wife was (thinking she was working late or on a trip) only to discover that she had just left him and filed for divorce.
le sigh

I just a friendly gal looking for options.
