embarrassing confessions

you know the blog http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

I love it and am always telling people about it.

yeah, I had to go to dictionary.com to see what a hyperbole was...and even then I was pronouncing it hyper-bowl. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that the only person who I said the name outloud to was my H, who mocked me mercilessly and informed me that it was pronounced "high-per-bo-lee"
I know that word. I've used that word. But for some reason I just didn't make the connection here. And maybe I need to take an english class.

i always, always, always need to take a moment before i say/read/read outl oud the word "subtle."  for some reason, it's "subs-still" to me.

CW, we have a friend that mispronounces maniacal all of the time.  He says may-nee-ack-uhl.  Instead of ma-nye-a-cal.  The minute he says it, he turns all red b/c he gets embarrassed that his brain goofed.

cw, do you still have some baby teeth?  maybe this is contributing to your problems with pronouncing adult words -- no adult teef.

No hmo, I don't still have my baby teeth. I do still have three wisdom teeth, so maybe that's where the problem lies, bastards!

Also, now I wonder what else I'm pronouncing terribly that no one is nice enough to inform me about.

i say "in-compare-able" rather than "in- com-pore-able."  i don't think that makes me that crazy, but dh enjoys a good point and laugh.

My douchy ex-bf made fun of me mercilessly for the way I pronounced ambulance. I said am-bue-LANse, he said it was am-bue-lince. I later realized that a whole lot of people put the emphasis on LAN and I'm not crazy and my ex-bf was just extra-douchy.

H says I pronounce chihuahua wrong, but I think I say it the same way he does, so who knows.

AM-bu-lance (that last "a" is more of a schwa, actually.)
    in-COM-perable
    chi-WAH-wah

That's how I say 'em, anyway.

I've always misread the word "misled". I read it as "my-zulled" not "mis-led" LOL. I blame my dad for pointing it out to me when I was younger. When you read it my way, it sounds a lot more fitting and sinister that the correct way, which is another reason why I like to read it that way.

I was behind a car today and read "PATRIOT somethingorother" on it.

    I read it as...Pat Riot.

    SMRT.

FI pronounces "theater" like this "thee-ay-tur". I have no idea where he got that, but he insists it's correct.

This isn't really a mispronunciation, but...you know the phrase, "play it by ear"?  My sister was sitting next to me reading an email that I was sending one day - I happened to use that phrase, and she burst out laughing, and telling me not to send it b/c I'd sound like an idiot.  Why, you ask???  Oh - just because she thought the phrase was "play it by YEAR" - LOL!!!  Yeah, then it was my turn to burst out laughing!  After a minute of arguing over it, she insisted we call Mom to see who was right!!!  Yup - me, the older, and much wiser sister. Wink
