Wedding Woes

::NOLA::

There's a news story this AM about a boy wearing heels to school and being told he was not allowed to wear them. The principle says that while it isn't a dress code violation, it was for the boys own safety that he won't be allowed to wear the heels.

What's your opinion on how the school is handling this?

I heard it on the radio, if I find a link to the story I'll post it.

    How old is the kid? Do girls get to wear heels? This changes my answer.

    I can see the schools point of view. It would make the young man a target for some pretty hateful behavior. Sad, but true.

    If it isn't a dress code violation then the school can't make him take them off, but if it leads to a school disruption, I could see them having some grounds to have him remove them.

    That's a tricky situation all the way around. I know that there was a boy that wanted to run for prom queen at a local school here, and it was a huge thing.

    -Boy was HS age
    -Girls are allowed to wear heels
    -He was pulled out of class and told to take them off
    -The students responded by having a theme week that included a "cross dressing day", and a boy wearing a dress was also asked to take that off.

    So it probably wasn't a problem for the students, just for the admins. He should get to wear the heels.

    Of course, we had a guy in my HS class who wore skirts on the regular. He just found them more comfortable than pants. None of us batted an eye at this.

    Thanks NOLA. I can see the school's point that it's their job to prevent any harm to the kid, he's their liability during school hours. But the other students response seems to be that the biggest disruption was having him pulled out of class. I think the school was just going to be "danged if they did and danged if they didn't"

    I'll admit to not understanding gender issues, but he has to be treated the same if he isn't violating the rules.
