SMDH - Math is hard, yo

My month board is doing a poll about 9/11.  How old were you, where were you, etc.

One poster responded: Don't know my exact age, but in high school.

O rly?

Some people should just remain silent.

I was 28, and had just taken my class to the library to check out books. The librarian came out and turned the tv on, and we watched what was happening.

I was a Sophomore in college. I was sitting at my desk in my room eating cottage cheese and raspberries in my robe. My 2 roommates were already at class. I turned on the TV and saw the coverage.

It was heartbreaking. I called my mom who was hysterical. My dad was in Michigan at a car auction, and she was by herself.

I went to my first class that morning, I think it was at 9 or 9:30. Teacher did not mention it -- class as usual.

I had lunch on campus and then split. I remember going to the gas station with my friends to fill up their cars because it was originally said we were cutting off all ties with the middle east.

I was a junior at college.  Went to my second class of the day, dismissed.  Went back to my dorm, the dorm ended up being deserted.  Because a bomb threat was called in, and I'm all "where did everyone go?".  ADURRRR

I was still on the West Coast at that point. I was heading to work and turned on the radio (it was a 5 minute commute) and heard about what was going on but didn't know exactly what had happened.

My boyfriend at the time called me at work to find out how my parents were (they were in NY at that time).

We were under lock down that day and closed early (I was working at a Jewish preschool in a synagogue.)

    oh good grief.

Although having a 9/11 birthday makes it slightly easier. 2001-1976= I turned 25 that day.

I had returned from a birthday road trip to Canada the day before and somehow had spent the whole night hurling and was sleeping it off. I had planned to go in to work at about noon, but that didn't happen, of course.

Evil boyfriend-at-the-time called me and said I might not have to go in. We really didn't understand the gravity of what was happening at that moment.

I was a freshman in college, waiting for my first class of the day to begin.  The kid that sat next to me asked me if I had heard what happened and I hadn't (I didn't watch tv before school, didn't listen to the radio on the way, etc), so he told me all about it.

Class went on as usual all day long.  Coach said a few words before bball practice that afternoon.

i was a freshman in college, in a lecture when the attack happened - we didn't find out about it until we were standing in the lobby of the engineering building headed for our next class. luckily, next class was in a computer lab, so we pulled up the news.

they cancelled classes for the rest of the day - only the 3rd time in 200+ years.

i remember calling my Dad to see if they were impacted. (his company contracts for the Navy)

    i stayed on campus.

since they instituted the "no fly" rule for a couple of days, it stopped all of the Life Flight helicopters that used to fly right past our dorm. i hit the deck the first time that a helicopter flew past when they resumed flights.

Still in high school now, hmm?

It was my first year of grad school.  I was hiding from my roommate and watching GMA before I ambled into class.  Saw one plane in the tower and thought "oh, crap that's a bad accident"  Then I saw #2 hit and thought "I don't think that was an accident"

I was 23, at work at a gas station where we weren't allowed to have a radio. Some guy came in screaming about it being the End Times, and I just rang him up and avoided engaging the crazy.

More and more people started trickling in and trying to talk to me about it, and I was all "Buh? What?"

When I got off that job, I went home for a bit and watched a little footage, and it was awful. But then I was off to my waitressing gig, where everyone was extremely subdued. We had crap business that night, and for weeks afterward, and the people who did come in were so dazed. Mostly we shook our heads at each other and wondered what was happening to the world. The manager put a TV out on the pie counter so we could all watch the president speak and keep up with any developments.

I was 19.  BFF (now SIL) and I were living together at the house we were housesitting for a few months.  I worked 1:30-10 and she worked 8-5.  She called me from work and said, "Planes are crashing into the WTC!!! Turn on the TV!"

I turned on the TV and the second plane hit.  I screamed.

I was at home getting ready to go to an off-site meeting for work.  I saw it on the Today show.  I was very near Offutt AFB (where they flew the President) and the jets scrambling above us were very unsettling.

After the dumb remark in the Bin Laden post, I had to step away from the board and let my blood pressure go down.

I was 21 and a senior in college.

I was a sophomore in Highschool, so 15. I got on the school bus and the driver turned on the radio and we listened to it all the way to school. Everyone was silent. When I got to school I used my lunch money to call my dad to tell him to turn on the tv, but he was already watching it. The news was on in first period and I don't remember doing any work that day.

all my contacts in ny worked in midtown, and i heard from them by the end of the week.

    Aagghh....I was 12 Embarassed

We were switching classes in the seventh grade and my locker neighbor told me about it. I thought it was a plane accident, but we watched the news in the library for the rest of the day and I started to realize it was an attack. I really didn't understand it at all. And sometimes I feel like I still don't. But I was terrified.

I was 20, and I was studying in London. We'd only been there for about 2 weeks by that point. A group of us were hanging around in the student lounge of our school waiting for a class to start and listening to the radio. When they broke in with the news we seriously thought it was some War of the Worlds hoax or something, but we turned the TV on and realized it was real.

We were instructed to go to class as usual until the staff could get more information. About an hour into class someone came up and told us they had the big screen on in the lecture room and everyone was watching. By the time we got downstairs I think the second plane had already hit, but the towers were still standing.

The news coverage was surreal, because we didn't have access to American channels, and it was nearly impossible to make international phone calls. There were parties in the streets (much like the ones yesterday at the White House and Ground Zero) in Muslim neighborhoods. We were given ludicrous safety advice such as "tell people you're Canadian if asked," and an urban legend spread around all the study abroad programs about Americans studying in Europe being the next targets. Every weekend someone had a friend of a friend of a friend who had advised them to get out of the city for a few days.
