WTF at letting your 13 y.o. dress like this?

Re: s/o Hearty Eyeroll

  • She must be the daugter of someone on my BMB who thinks that people who don't like two-piece bathing suits on infant girls are actually the creepy ones.
  • WTF at nothing but booty shorts for an 8-year-old? We just went on a summer clothes trip to Marshall's - I had to return something, we were there, I figured we might as well pick up some stuff. The shirts were cute, but almost all the shorts were tiny - and there were no jeans at all, which is what she actually wanted.

Thank god for Levi's - they had long shorts in her size. So I can imagine just giving right the fck up by the time they're 13.

  • Some parents don't know the power of the word, NO. I bet that young lady can't give her parents a reason why she wants to dress like that.

What happened to the days where you knew you could ask, but you already knew that the answer would be, no?

Don't even get me started on Willow Smith?

It's not at all what I would want my child to wear, but I see it EVERYWHERE.  SIL's 11 yo had a halter shirt with bra straps hanging out and short shorts on Sat.

  • I'm all for being in fashion, but not when fashion= hooker. I feel the same way with boys looking like slobs. I have one cousin, and I always think, "Do you own a shirt that fits?"

He's 21 and doesn't own a tie. Not 1. He had to borrow one from his dad to attend my gm's funeral. Yes, she would have talked about his parents bad for that one.

  • When did bra straps become an acceptable accessory for *anyone*? It's *underwear*.

And when I was a teen, I would have been mortified to show a bra strap. Like, would have wanted to just die, because someone would have seen my underwear. (I'm still not thrilled with it, but it happens. By accident.) What do teenage girls get embarrassed about these days?

  • Please add wearing pjs in public.

We took the kids on a college tour, and I lost count the number of kids I saw walking to class in pjs. Really? Is 10:00 too early to put on clothes?

  • YES!  I remember being horrified by the thought that anyone would KNOW I was wearing a bra.  One time a coach put his hand on my back, just pushing me forward in a demonstration of how to do some volleyball move or something.  I was 13 and soooo embarassed that he probably felt my bra through my shirt.  My friend asked if I would rather he think I didn't wear a bra and I couldn't wrap my brain around that, either.  I was just embarassed to be alive at that age, though.

This drives me BONKERS!  BFF once suggested that we wear PJs on a flight that left at 6am.  She thought that it would be acceptable since it was soooo early.  Oh really?  No.

Worse than pjs is the slippers!  I remember the first time my mom caught me without a slip.  There was WAR in our home.

I do hate that there's no way to 'opt out' of the subtext that clothing sends messages.

But grown ups are rsponsible to make sure the message isn't crap until the kid is old enough to 'get' what message there is.
