Wedding Woes

Another annoying name

I was reading something the other day written by a lady saying that she named her daughter Kinlee to honor her grandmother whose maiden name was McKinley.  No.  You did not.  You took her name, dumbed it up and slapped it on your baby.  There is no honor in that.

  • *DED* @ "You took her name, dumbed it up, and slapped in on your baby!"

I have this mental image of a poor baby being slapped with a 'My Name Is: Kinlee' tag...of course the baby is crying, not because she was slapped, but because she knows how dumb her mom is.
  • She should have just left well-enough alone and called the child McKinley.

  • I agree. Why didn't she just name her McKinley? That's a perfectly fine name. I knew a McNeil in college, and she was adorable.

  • Although, now that I think about it...I have a friend whose maiden name is Neill (2 Ls).  She named her son Neil (1 L) and saved him a lifetime of, "No, that's Neill with two Ls."  And I don't fault her for that.

Kinlee's mom is dumb.  Neil's mom is a smarty.
  • It was that article that HMO posted on FB from CNN about "I didn't know I was pregnant."  THe woman named her kid McKinlee after her family name of McKinley.   McKinlee Burger.
  • Was that it?  I could have sworn in was a magazine article about adoption and they dropped the Mc.  Now I need to find that article and see if I combined the two stories in my head or if two women really did this.

    YES!  The IDKIWP article.
  • i think using a last name as a first name is stupid, no matter how you spell it.
  • I used to work at a summer camp and would encounter soooo many ridiculous I'm-going-to-name-my-kid-a-last-name-to-honor-someone parents.  I think for the most part it's a bad idea.  I mean, who names their daughter Harrington and doesn't see the nickname Dirty Harry coming?  Yeah.  That really happened.
