Wedding Woes

A few action movie reviews (out of theaters, but available on dvd)

Captain America:

Maybe not the most tightly plotted movie ever, but it was as much fun as the first Iron Man, which says a lot.  And the 1940s styles and vaguely sepia tint of the cinematography made me nostalgic for a time I never actually knew.  I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece, but I loved it nonetheless.

The Green Lantern:

The premise is kind of cringingly dumb, but if you can get past that (and it helps if you like that character Ryan Reynolds always plays), this movie was a lot of predictable superhero goodness.  No stunning visuals like in Captain America, but it does get extra points for addressing the ridiculousness of people not being able to recognize a "disguised" superhero when he barely has any of his face covered at all.

Whatever that newest Transformers movie was called:

It was okay.  I know everyone says it was terrible, but hell, it's not just a movie about fighting robots, but a sequel to a sequel of a movie about fighting robots.  As long as you don't go in expecting The Usual Suspects, you'll probably have a good time.  There was a lovely moon landing conspiracy, with a cameo from Buzz Aldrin, that I'd have liked to have seen made into a whole Ancient Aliens meets National Treasure style scifi thing, but such is life.  I was most pleased by how they addressed the wtf factor of Shia LeBoeuf catching chicks way out of his league.  Overall, meh.  Watch it if it's on cable, but I wouldn't waste Amazon credits on it.

    I did like Thor.

Are you wondering what the deal is with the Avengers movie?  Are we going to get to know the guy with the arrows or the token woman, or are those throwaway characters?  And what's the deal with them basically doing the same damn Hulk movie twice but with different actors, and then replacing Hulk a third time for the Avengers movie?

  • Daredevil is second perhaps only to Aquaman in superhero lameness.  Robin could probably kick his ass.

  • That's the one superhero movie of the summer that I haven't caught yet.

  • XMen First Class is probably one of the best action comic movies since the first Spiderman. The only thing I didn't like about it was January Jones.  I swear, her acting ability is on par with Richard Gere:  stand still, simper and "emote" by moving your head position.

The guy with the arrows is Hawkeye and he is suppose to be in the Avengers movie, though I don't know with the same actor or not.
