Wedding Woes

wedding nightmare

So, I am supposed to leave for my wedding in England and this volcano erupts grounding all flights into the UK. Now, my flight is cancelled and there are no flights available in the immediate future. Trying to figure out how to make it to the altar next saturday!
My advice--never worry about trivial things like a wedding dress and what vegetable goes best with the chicken entree, just worry about mother nature.
A volcano in Iceland?! What are the odds?!

Al I can do is hope this cloud dissipates so I can actually marry this gent.

So awful, that it is laughable.

That is a woe. I'm not really sure what to tell you. Is he already in England? Do you have travel insurance?

    Time to start swimming!

Just kidding.  A week is a long time in air travel land.  Can you fly to france or something and take a train to England?  How much of Europe is affected by the ash cloud?

That sucks. You'll figure something out though. Disasters happen all the time and people still get married.

[QUOTE]DG, it's pretty bad. the volcano erupted in Iceland and all of england and ireland is grounded and closed. last time this happened, it was several weeks before it cleared up.

Yikes.  I'd still consider trains a possiblity, or at least look into it.  Spain and Italy are far away from England.  It'd take an extra couple of days, but it'd get her to the altar on time (unless the trains are all screwed up, too. And I'm sure they're overfilled with Europeans who are unable to travel by air, too.)

Depending on where the groom and the majority of the guests are, you might just want to do it in the US. I would imagine it's not just the bride whose travel is screwed up, and there are enough people waiting for flights that I can't imagine you could get everyone there in time. This is the one situation where I wouldn't side-eye a JOP ceremony now with the "real" wedding later.

Eurocontrol, the European air traffic coordinating agency, said travel disruptions on Friday were likely to be worse than on Thursday, with airspace completely closed in Ireland, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Estonia. Parts of France, Germany and Poland were shut down as well.

"The cloud of volcanic ash is continuing to move east and south-east and that the impact will continue for at least the next 24 hours," Eurocontrol said in a statement. About 17,000 flights scheduled to fly through European airspace on Friday probably will be canceled, the agency said, and about half of the 600 daily flights between the continent and North America will be delayed or scrubbed.

London Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt Airport -- Europe's three largest airport hubs -- remained closed on Friday morning. Britain's National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said that restrictions on airspace in England would remain until at least Saturday at 1 a.m.

<div>I'm sorry, this does suck, but really: Iceland only exists because it's volcanic, just like Hawaii. Do they not teach this in school anymore? </div>

OMG. I've just come to the this board to see if anyone else is affected by this bloody volcano. I'm in the same situation! I'm in Norway, the wedding is in the USA and half the guests are from all over Europe. I am starting to slide into a panic myself. I've looked into transatlantic crossings and the shortest I can find is 7 days. I'm supposed to go from Norway to Edinburgh on Thursday to meet up the bridesmaids and do their dresses together -- can't even figure out how to get from Norway to UK without it taking three days!!

I've been checking out http://www.freighter-travel.com/ and http://www.freighterworld.com/for non-cruise transatlantic crossings. UK/France/Germany to North America. Try this -- as of Saturday afternoon, it looks like this situation is not going to change for months, so I would think that some sort of boat travel has got to start. We can't be trapped in Europe indefinitely.

    Also, try this one http://www.cunard.com/CruiseCalendar.asp?LeftNav=Planner&plan_active=CruiseFinder

All the best of luck, if you find a solution, please post it here!
