Wedding Woes

Poll: WWWWD?

From my BMB:

"I was driving home this afternoon, I had (child), in the car. There was a man on the side of the road picking up ply wood and other ends and placing it back into his pick up truck. I'm guessing at some point it all fell out. I felt bad that no one had stopped to help him out. I wanted to but it's not like I could have just left (child) in the car alone or let him roam the side of the street. It was in a pretty busy area. I just felt bad for the man and feeling pretty guilty for not stopping."

Re: Poll: WWWWD?

  • Wait...oops.  I would've stopped if H was with me, and wanted to help...without kid.

  • The OP asked if anyone would have stopped.  All but two people said no.  Those two people are "sad" that no one would help and they feel bad that we are all living our lives in constant fear.  Our children have a higher chance of ending up obese than being murdered or abducted.
  • I would stop if it was more important merchandise and the person chasing after it was older or trying to watch a small child.  If it was in the road causing a traffic hazzard I would slow waay down to alert the traffic behind me.  But no way would I be stopping to help someone pick up scrap wood from the side of the road, especially if I had a kid with me.

  • Sure, but I'd rather be obese than murdered or abducted.  The suckage of those 2 potential outcomes is WAY higher, y'know?  I don't live my life in fear, but I make good decisions so I don't have to; one of those is not pulling over on a road to help a stranger.  Sounds like he was doing okay to me, what does he really need help for?

This exactly was my response to that.  We don't intentionally put ourselves and our children in those situations.
  • I don't even see this issue as a stranger danger. Unless the guy was holding up a sign reading "Women and children, please stop and help!" then he was doing a really bad job of luring in victims.  Because people just don't stop to help you pick up scrap wood.  Put your hood up and maybe lie on the shoulder with a face covered in ketchup if you want unsuspecting people to stop.

well, the driver of the pickup isn't smrt enough to secure the load properly and endagered all sorts of people by throwing debris in their path...it's his own damn fault, no?

(I've stopped to help people doing such things sometimes--but really, I'm 1-not dressed for it and 2-paranoid and 3-not really super strong.  By the time I asess, stop safely, get out, etc, I'm going to spend 30 minutes saving them 10.)

My brother treated a man who stopped to help a stranded motorist.  When the good samaritan walked up to the car the other guy pulled a shotgun.  Luckily the nice guy thought to stick his fingers in the barrel and he "only" lost 2 fingers.

This is why I have non-emergency police numbers programmed.  I do my part by calling for help.
  • Zsa, the only thing I have for that is that no one ever thought by helping Ted Bundy they were going to end up dying either.

And yes, with 6.  I actually have the same thing and will call for help for people.
  • But Ted Bundy was good looking!  We all know that attractive people aren't dangerous.  Bundy was framed!

i would NEVER have stopped, and I would probably have never thought of stopping. I also wouldn't feel bad about any of it. if anything, i would think to myself, "geez that sucks, i hope he gets that cleaned up quickly.".

i'll gladly call 911 for someone.

and the guy? i'd feel like he was an idiot for not securing the items in his truck in the first place. i side eye any9one with a bleeding heart here, really.

maybe i think of MDK in these sorts of situations.

And we all know being a big fat fatty is way worse than being murdered. <div>
</div><div>This is just common sense. You never stop for hitchhikers. You don't stop for people on the side of the road. Have a cell phone? Great. Call AAA or the police non-emergency line for someone stranded. DO NOT STOP. People are jerks, and even if it's a woman with a kid, she might just want to carjack you, yo. </div>

hell, last winter, 'member, I got stuck in snow w/ the kid?

Truck slowed down and I said that the Mr. was on his way, but thanks for stopping...and was treated to a string of profanity and then had to huddle in my car hoping the assbags didn't come back until the Mr. showed up.

I've stopped, and I'll probably stop again, but that one isn't a 'necessary to stop' thing.

And it does have a hearty dose of "dumbass could have killed someone w/ his improperly secured load' <dirty.
