Re: br poll

  • disposable diapers right?  Not that I cd, but I believe you do flush those solids.
  • No.  But DD wears disposables (cloth would be another issue), so the whole thing gets wrapped up and tossed.

Or else the dipe gets shoved down the toilet and I run before the toilet backs up and overflows (jk)

  • we use disposables. everything goes in the diaper champ and out on trash days. scraping these down/flushing seems like a waste of time and water.
  • Yes. We used disposables but the diaper went in the "green bin" when solids had been removed. (not to the garbage/landfill) We do a green bin for kitchen waste/used tissue/diapers/food packaging that isn't plastic and things like that and it's collected with the recycling. (our "blue bin/box" for all other recycling)

I assume most places have it like this too.

Never heard of multiple recycling bins, and that would drive me crazy.

  • I have never heard of that, either.

You mean public/store bathrooms have this sort of sorting?

I'm lucky to even find a bathroom that has any sort of garbage bin within layup distance of the diaper changing table.

  • When we had a baby in disposables, we did not flush the solids.
Now that we have a 3 year old (!!!!) in disposables who has HUGE poops, I do flush them.  I swear to god that her poops are bigger then mine and her's regularly stop up the toilet.

  • Psh. We didn't even have curbside recycling until this year, never mind multiple bins. And I live in a fairly significant metropolitan area.

The midwest is bass ackwards, yo.

My parents, on the other hand, who live in rural Mississippi, had curbside when I was in HS.

It did drive everyone nuts for the first few years. And at that point there were three. Now it's just completely natural. Two bins and garbage. (only allowed on bag of garbage every 2 weeks so we have to recycle)
  • HMO - WHY DO YOU ASK?  STORY???

  • I did say "no," but I've been known to flush them sometimes. The diaper pail smell is getting ridiculous. Flushing doesn't really help, but I still try on occasion.

Thank god we're down to 1 in diapers.

And yes, the instructions for the disposables do say to flush solids.

so is the "green bin" for compostable materials? (i.e. veggie / plant materials, paper products, cardpboard, etc.) - i still can't see diapers as compostable (even scraped) because you would still have human waste remnants, and i thought only herbivore waste was "safe" for composting purposes.

  • I didn't realize that anyone could recycle disposable diapers.  Or are you diapering with corn husks?

  • i don't know what dg's big girl words mean.

no story.  i was just thinking about it because we do flush all solids to keep the odor down (remember, we live in a 2br apt).  it came up because i changed baby mo at the airport and flushed the solids, and people stared at me like i was crazy.  but i figured that no one wants to have a smelly baby diaper stanking it up even worse than a public bathroom already smells.

there are compostable /biodegradable diapers available. i think  they use a wood pulp for absorption.

ETA: DG is taking about the super absorbent core in most disposable diapers.
I don't know for sure on the crunchy granola disposables because I'm not about to pay like $.75/ea for diapers.
  • No.  Poopy diapers get tied up in a plastic Target sack and taken outside immediately.  Yes, every time, rain or shine.  We're like postal workers when it comes to poop in the house.

Like the shredded pine kitty litter pellets?  It is a good idea if it works, but a dry diaper full of pellets makes me giggle.

  • I'm over here wide eyed at scraping poop from a disposable, since that's why I won't do cloth. Never heard of such a thing, but I'm also new to this game.
  • $10 says blush lives in California. We have the green bin/blue bin thing too, but we ignore the green bin (the lawn people put clippings in there, but that's it). It drives me insane that the garbage bin is half the size of the recycling, and they will not take overflow.

Yeah, we'd be SOL at one bag per week. We usually have a minimum of 6. Of course, we don't recycle (it's an extra charge; we have private trash service), but we do compost almost all our non-meat food scraps, coffee grounds, and non-cleaned-with paper trash. <div>
</div><div>Probably doesn't help that I'm constantly throwing out the hoardy hole supplies. </div>

  • Taking cardboard boxes alone out of the trash makes a major difference in trash volume.  We only go through one trash bag per week and we probably could be recylcing a little more of that if H were more careful.
