Messed up with ring

My FI and I decided to go with a cz instead of a regular diamond. My econ professor was talking about how russia has these huge diamond reserves and whenever they release the full volume diamonds will not be worth what they are now. Even if we had all the money of steve jobs i just cannot justify spending so much for them. Anyway we picked out a 2 c. diamond/cz solitare ring on overstock in a 10k yellow gold band. It came today and the stone looks freakin huge! Its beautiful and i dont want to make my fi feel bad but im not sure that anyone is going to believe its real, which is kind of important to me bc my family will make me and my fi feel bad about it. i know it shouldnt matter especially with my family, but it does. my fi could have saved up enough for it over the years bc weve been together for four years now and have been planningto get married in that time. but it just looks so big i know that czs are measured my milimeters instead of carat weight, and the website said it was 2 carats (and its a round shape) but im not sure. i really love it, especially after all the trouble and going round and round about returning it, and its beautiful. if it is actually 2 carats, do you guys think its too big?

2 carats is about 6-7 millimeters, which is a substantial size for an engagement ring.

Honestly, I think it's kindof ridiculous to say you don't want a diamond because you disagree with the way the industry is run, and then turn around and say it's important that people think your ring is a diamond. CZ does NOT look like a diamond, especially at the 2 carat size. It will discolor and chip over time, which will be a dead giveaway. You're better off going with a non-traditional precious stone like ruby or sapphire. That way you're spending your money on a stone that actually has value, but you're still not contributing to the diamond industry.

Tell your FI you decided you don't want to be a faking faker, return the ring, and get something real.

just to clarify, i dont have problems with the diamond industry or how it is conducted- my professor was discussing with our class that russia has such a wealth of diamonds, that once theyre released into the market they will be worthless because the only difference between a cultured diamond and one found in nature is that diamonds found in nature in good condition are rare, and are then worth substantially more than cultured diamonds

Excuse me, you are taking diamond advice from an econ prof? 

Tell your fi you don't like the ring.  Return it and get something else.

I don't understand why you would order a 2 caret CZ ring if you're trying to pass it off as real. Me thinks you should have gone with something smaller.

Actually, lab diamonds are pretty pricey since they take a lot of work to make. And CZs are not lab diamonds. I also don't see why you want to pretend your CZ is a diamond... I would never lie about my ring. In fact, I regularly tell people it's a lab-created stone (lab sapphires, unlike diamonds, are much less expensive than the real thing)

Yes, at 2C, everyone will wonder if it's real, especially if the rest of your life doesn't have trappings of extravagance.  Return it for a smaller CZ or get a nontraditional stone or just get a real diamond if you want one - resale value isn't really a factor in most engagement ring purchases.

Lab created White sapphires look like diamonds and are a much nicer quality than cz.  IMO 2 carats is just gawdy for any stone, maybe because Im like simple designs.
