Dance floor big problem :(

I need help. I will not and cant afford $200-$300 to rent a dance floor. So problem is I have been to quite a few weddings outside. Some had dance floors and some did not. People danced way more at the weddings with the dance floor. Dancing is very important to me. Do you all have any suggestions to make the dance area better?? (sorry Dont know how to word the question)

I have been thinking of buying plywood somehow attaching them into a square of 12x12 feet. Then covering it in maybe vinyl tablecloth material. I dont know plans defiantly are not figured out.

I desperately need some help please :)

I think the plywood would work just fine. I don't think you need to necessarily cover it with anything.

Sorry to sound like a downer, but plywood and sheeting will probably cost at least $200 and then you still have to cut & assemble it, then transport it to and from the venue.  Plus, it sort of sounds a little dangerous.  If not attached together properly there is a pretty high chance someone might trip and fall over edges or ripped sheeting (from high heeled shoes, etc.).

If dancing is that important and the savings are small (especially compared to the work involved) then it might just be best to rent the dance floor.

That being said, I think you could do something pretty with flower petals or something similar to sort of mark off the dance floor area without having to rent or make something.

I have to agree wtih Darby on the cost of DIYing a floor vs. renting plus the logistics of it and safety.  Those were my concerns when I read the plywood sheet idea.  How many guests again?  Can you afford to buy different sized cheapo flip flops for guests (namely the ladies of course) to wear if it's on grass?  Just a thought.

Flip flops sound like a great idea to me too, so I 3rd them!

I think flip flops and a roped off area are the cheapest way to go! I'm so sorry! It always sucks when you find out that you can't get what you wanted.
I hope it works out for you!

do you think they danced because of the floor or because there was a special dancing space? could you mark it out in a different way?

what do you girls think of laying a 12x12 piece of vinyl flooring and staking it to the grass. I could get that piece for $30.....I am just so fusterated about this and want people to dance. Maybe I should cut costs some where else. Is anyone renting a dance floor for cheap???

If you have good music and a decent space, people will dance regardless of whether there's grass or wood on the floor.  I always just took my shoes off and danced barefoot, but if you wanted to get flip flops, that'd be fine.  I never know what sizes to order, but if you want to go that route, it's your call.

I don't think staking vinyl to the ground is a good idea. In my head it seems unsafe. I'm envisioning someone's heel going through and causing her to fall, possibly dragging others down ... no bueno. If you have somewhere else to cut and dancing is important to you, perhaps do that. Have you tried actually calling places and negotiating? Maybe some places would be willing to come down, especially if you have to rent other items from them.

Ditto Melissa.  And I worry a little about rope on the floor - knowing my klutzy drunk arse, I'd trip on the rope on the ground and BLAM!  I did like the rose petal border idea, but that could get costly quick.  Definitely try like Melissa said to call and see if you can negotiate.  If need be I think I might have 1 or 2 coupons for Grand and another company that's like 10-20% off leftover from the wedding show.

I think you should either go natural with grass, or rent a dance floor.  Homemade options for this just seem like a disaster waiting to happen.

I was thinking the same thing as melissa (about the safety issues)... if dancing is that important to you, my advice: save money elsewhere and rent a real dance floor.  I think having a good DJ/music is also pretty important like pp mentioned, but setting the mood with the right space/lights/floor is just as important.

DH was a very "no regrets" kind of wedding planner and I say it over and over on here - you only get one shot at it :)

I agree that the diys sound like mayhem waiting to happen. I think that the issue is having a designated dancing space. So I would say to comb grassy area for things that would bother bare feet like rocks, animal waste, pine cones, etc. Then mark it off some festive way.

You could also include something in your invitations about how the dancing area is going to be grass so choose your footwear accordingly. Besides, I think dance floors look funny in the middle of an outdoor wedding. Don't know why.
