Yes, you can laugh at me for this too. 

If I'm making a quilt with 1-foot-square squares, and I want the finished quilt to be 9feet by 9 feet, I will need 81 squares, correct?

yes. 9 rows of 9 squares. 9x9 = 81

You probably already know this, but you will need to cut your squares 13.25" square to allow for a 5/8th seam allowance on all four sides.

I didn't, but I don't mind if it's a little under the full measurement. It's a beach blanket made of scraps, so it doesn't even have to be "good enough".
