Deodorant sponge- worth it or gimmick?

I've seen these around, they're sponges that you use to get deodorant out of clothes I think. Are they with it? What is it really?

I have seen those too, but I have never used them. I have used a slightly damp washcloth. The only problem with this is that depending on the fabric, fibers from the washcloth might rub off. So a sponge would probably work better. Not sure what specifically makes it a "deodorant sponge" though.
