I'm so upset and embarrassed. Not 10 minutes after I posted yesterday I went outside to grab something from the car. My neighbor was out walking her two dogs, and she stopped to chat. The front door hadn't lached behind me and Herbert ran out of the house and went after her two dogs. I really think it was playful at first, but her dogs were skittish so there was a lot of barking and jumping. It took me maybe 20 seconds to pull Herbert away and get her on the ground. In the scuffle, the neighbor got tangled in the leashes and fell. She's probably in her 60s. I didn't think there was any biting, but this morning the neighbor came by and said one of the dogs had an injured leg and is at the vet. I guess they're xraying and looking for a bite wound. She gave me the vet's card, and it's obvious she wants me to pay for it. I really don't think Herbert bit her dog. It's possible that the leg got hurt in the tangle with the leashes, but the dogs are shorter than Herbert and she was in their faces, not going for their feet. Herbert has never had aggression problems. The only times she's gotten into it with other dogs at daycare she's been the one attacked. Like I said, this incident started out as playful until the other dogs reacted. That said, Herbert was off her leash on my property this all happened on my front lawn and the other dog is the one hurt. This is not the introduction to the neighborhood I wanted. H is worried that paying is an admission of fault. I feel like we were at fault, and I just want to pay the bill and let it be forgotten. But if we pay now, does it open us up to having this woman blame Herbert for every potential future problem with her dog's leg? Or will Herbert end up with some black mark on her permanent record?
