Wow @ voting line

Friend in Virginia just posted pictures showing 1900 people in his voting line.  He had 200 in front of him.  Just about an hour ago.

That's dedication!

Re: Wow @ voting line

  • I know it's crazy, but I love seeing the lines and hearing that polls have to stay open late to accommodate voters. Really, there are very few reasons eligible voters shouldn't vote and the number of people who vote should be sky high. No one is getting killed over voting in this country and we shouldn't take this right for granted. Okay I will shut up now.

  • Fck. If you have 1900 people in line, you need to split into more polling places.

I intentionally went at an off-peak time, but I have never seen a line at our polling place. Like, zero. And I know I don't live in the most populated place, but there are 15,000 people in this town, and we have more than a handful of polling places.

  • I heard once that voting is mandatory in Australia, and they find our turnout #s absurd.

Then again, I'm not sure I want tens of millions of uneducated and uninformed Americans at the polls.

  • It goes to show how many people DON'T vote except for the president.  SMH

  • I think it's stupid that we try to vote in one day.  All states should have early voting and I think it should be for the last month of the election, when campaigns are also suspended.  And publicly financed, with free TV commercials allotted to each candidate.  I think it should be mandatory, b/c I don't think all voters showing up are educated either and that's not a prerequisite for voting, only citizenship is.

I'm with PMeg in feeling a sense of pride about it, b/c it should be important to lots of people.

    But I know I'm crazy.  :D
  • I'm with Varuna on allowing early voting everywhere.  It pisses me off that my state doesn't hve it.
(repeatedly they've screwed up/not counted absentee ballots.  And I either gt to take a personal day or do absentee, which, is kinda BS)

These people can't really argue that long lines don't disenfranchise certain subsets of voters more than others.
I mean, I could take a personal day/personal half day and go vote.  It'd be a 'waste' of my time off and I'd hate to do it, but I have done it, and I will again.
The Mr. would have his pay docked, but could do it (and we could afford it)
Both of us have had jobs where we couldn't afford that hour or 2 or 3 off work and/or we'd not have a job if we'd have done it.
