Doc appt yesterday

So it took an hour longer than it should have because someone came in that was in preterm labor @ 29 weeks. We were waiting for the doc that had to check on that lady so we were right across from the exam room.

At one point the nurse called out for a flashlight and a bucket. me= wtf!?

They wheeled her out and over to the hospital which is connected to the docs office.

Doc sees us, finally. We go over questions and concerns and then go to hear the heartbeat.

She has a tough time finding it because the baby is moving around a  lot but we hear it for a couple of seconds. She sayd "Might have another girl, fast HB and moving like crazy" We'll see.

She decided to get the u/s in there just to confirm heartbeat and check what's up with my spotting.

We got  a peek at the baby again and it actually looks like a baby now! Little legs and arms. A wiggle worm for sure. It was all over the place.

Then she looked around my uterus and it turns out i have this pocket of blood around the placenta and as the placenta grows the blood is getting pushed out. She said it's pretty normal and I should be fine as long as I don't notice any period-like bleeding or have cramping. I'm just taking her at her word that this is normal and not Googling "blood around placenta" and freaking myself out.

I'm rotating to see every doctor in the practice since any one of them could be on call when I deliver. I actually liked this one better than my original doc and may switch.

Appt to check gender should be June 7ish. My next appt is May 7 and I'll only be 15 weeks so it will be too early then :(

Also, I'm going to have to get one of those old people pill things soon. I have the prenatal vitamin, Zofran, extra iron because I'm anemic and now extra folic acid just in case because it can help prevent cleft lip/palate which is a slight risk (she said 1-2%) since H was born with it.

I'm kind of WTF that they didn't tell me to start taking the extra earlier because if CL/P was going to happen it would be in the first tri.

Sounds like an adventure!  Yay for seeing the baby again.  Boo to not knowing about the folic acid.  1-2% is really small though.

Yay for happy, healthy Cupcake Baby!  Is it wrong that I'm rooting for a girl for you?  I think Autumn + Sidekick = teh Ossum.  I guess a boy could be her sidekick, at least for a while, but it wouldn't be quite the same.

I am also WTF at the flashlight and bucket.

I'm also rooting for a girl. Ssssh, don't tell.

Question (for any of the preggos or recently preggos)- Did you do the genetic screening @ 13 weeks?

I opted not to. They can see cleft lip.palate on the u/s and if there's anything else IDK that I would want to worry for the last 6 months of my pregnancy. Is that totally insane?

We opted out of the screening.  We knew it wouldn't change anything so why bother.  I might if there is a next kid just because I'll be over 35 and might want the time to prepare.

    I don't think it's insane at all.

I didn't do any genetic screening, but I did the Ultrascreen (ultrasound + blood test) around 11 weeks.  That's the one that checks for chromosomal abnormalities, and it came back with <1/10,000 chance of her chromosomes being out of whack, so we let it go at that.  I was offered cystic fibrosis screening since DH and I are both whiteys, but we opted against it.

I've been thinking about what I'll do next time, since I'll be one of those "geriatric pregnancies."  I'm leaning toward nothing special:  no amnio, no CVS, nothing more than I did this time.  I don't fault people who do it, but I can definitely see your side:  why worry for no reason?

The good news is - even babies that are born with cleft lips or palates now can be fixed pretty much right away and leave minimal scarring.

So glad everything's good! Your prenatal has Folic Acid in it, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I can't wait to find out what you're having.

Good idea about not googling. It really is the devil. Do not do it. I got myself into numerous crying fits yesterday over google. NOT WORTH IT.

the pocket of blood sounds like what I had with DB2 (subchorionic hemorrhage).  I did have some bleeding, but I obviously ended up with a happy, healthy, bouncing baby boy when it was all over.  Doc said it's VERY common.

We did do the 13w screening for downs, trisomy, etc.  Mostly, I just wanted to see the baby.  I was 33 when Des was born, so not technically geriatric, but also not 23, you know?  I also would have wanted lots of time to wrap my head around the idea of having a baby with special needs.  Heck, it took me weeks just to wrap my head around the idea of having a boy (and then a second boy).  I can't imagine the thought process around learning your kid has downs syndrome.

And YAY for baby-shaped babies!  That's always so exciting.  And yay for strong heartbeats.

<div>My bro had a cleft lip, and they fixed him right up - I think he was only in the hospital an extra week, too. And that was twenty-some years ago: they can only have gotten better at it since then. </div>
